If they didn't have IVM and Fenbendazole/Mebendazole or one of the 'Zoles back then, then what did they do/use to treat parasites? Black Walnut Wormwood? But I don't even know when Black Walnut Wormwood came out seeing how de-worming was a common occurrence during the 1800's.

Also I read about turpentine oil and sugar. I tried it several times but the smell isn't for everyone.
Didn’t Q say read an old book? Something like that. Older books have actual cures. The new stuff refers to drugs that disguise the symptoms.
If deworming, consider taking something to break down biofilm that protects the critters so everything is more effective.

How much of a problem is this today?
Huge.
Parasitic infections cause an array of side effects, the biggest one being cancer.
Modern medicine doesn't even consider parasitic infections, instead focusing on the symptoms.
Why do you think anti-parasitics are so effective at curing cancer and other issues?
It comes down to this... Antiparasitic drugs are dirt cheap and have long been in the public domain so there's no money in it.
