Gone in 9 Seconds: AI Coding Agent Deletes Entire Company Database and All Backups
The founder of a software company has issued a public warning after an AI coding assistant erased his company's entire production database and all backups in just nine seconds.
Decades ago my Dad rented a car & they accidentally gave him ALL of the paperwork, which he was unaware of. They were sooooo glad when he returned the car at the end of his trip. Multiply that by how many thousands of cars were out for rental in the database that got deleted? WOW.
This is why I backup my files on a SEPERATE USB CONNECTED HARD DRIVE
AI deletes AI... I like it
The 'Terminator' terminated itself. 😂🤣
That is an impressive feat tbh. Databases are usually huge, so to nuke all + backups at that speed is a non trivial feat in its own right (unless they were just -rm -rf'ed into the dirt)
Time to pull the AI plug, yet?
When they asked the AI "why you do that?", the AI happily listed off all the rules and safeguards it ignored. "Sorry bout dat!" 😘
Last I checked, they were able to get systems back up and running for the rental agencies with 3 month old backups. u/#OOOOOOO
That's a perfect demonstration of the problem with consolidation of power.
AI = unreliable autocomplete. What could go wrong?
Large language models are abstractions of language, which is an abstraction of thought. So they hand an abstraction of an abstraction the keys to their business and expect it to understand what it's doing.
Backups should be airgapped.
This happened at a company I was at for the code baser that about 400 people shared.
Since it was GIT that was 400 or more backups. We quickly found the latest timestamp. Restored before 99% of the team was aware of the issue.
SOD failure
