A week after we all celebrated his grandchild's first birthday, Bobby was at work and collapsed in front of his coworker. Fortunately his coworker was able to start CPR until the EMTs arrived.
He was life-flighted to Boston and promptly placed in ICU with respirator as his brain activity was minimal. MRI didn't detect any blockages in his heart, lungs or brain. Doctors said the sudden loss of oxygen to his brain could take a long time to recover. For about a month he remained comatose and then slowly started moving and making noises. I believe he got the covid shots since he's a truck driver and travels across state lines.
It's been a few months since the incident and he's now able to have brief conversations and has regained full function of his body.
Unfortunately, he has very poor short term memory and gets angry if he doesn't get his way. Bobby was perfectly normal before this and had NO signs of Alzheimer's / Dementia.
Bobby is over 6 feet tall, late 50's and a strong active guy. He has gotten physical with medical staff which is NOT like him at all. They had to put a police officer outside his hospital room to help restrain him due to his outbursts.
His family is at a total loss as they do not know what to do. He can never drive trucks again and he was the family breadwinner.

As a former SLP who dealt with cognitive issues I will note that your friend has had a significant brain injury from anoxia to his brain. This is not dementia, but brain damage can cause personality changes and short term memory is usually the first thing to go.
He may continue to improve over time. But there may be some permanent damage. I will say a prayer for him that he continues,

I ask, in the name of Jesus, that you would heal this disease, that you would have compassion and bring healing from all sickness. Lord if you are with us wherever we are, you are with Bobby right now. Please draw him to salvation through Christ Jesus. You can make him understand even in the state he is in. Fill him with your Spirit, Love, & Peace. Let him feel that peace and give you the anger that is affecting him. Let him know you can make a way where he can't find one. Drain the anger from him. Send health & healing to him. Provide the necessary people & resources he needs to recover and his family needs to survive & thrive, giving you all the glory. Thank you for his co-worker, EMT's & Medical staff for all their training & skill that has brought Bobby through this. You are such a good & gracious God to provide for us before we even need it. Thank you & Bless your Holy name. I ask all this in Jesus' Holy & Mighty name. Amen

My FIL developed fronto-temporal dementia, due to a lesion caused by a TBI.
He ended up hospitalized, due to heart issues. While in the hospital, he became increasingly paranoid and violent. They had to call in police because he threw a nurse against the wall. He ended up tied to the bed for two weeks, constantly thrashing and fighting.
I finally got a handle on what they were giving him and did some research on how some people react to Ativan.
Lo and behold, we convinced them to stop the drug and within 24 hours he was back to his mellow self and never had another episode for the duration of his illness.

Bobby is restrained during the night as he keeps trying to leave the hospital and will fight to get out. During the day, the police & security have to escort medical staff into his room.

I would almost guarantee that he is being given Ativan (lorazepam). Definitely worth getting the list of his drugs and reading up on the side effects.
There is a terrifying case study of what happened to a person who was given it for claustrophobia during an MRI.
I had to fight the doctors to get them to stop the drug.

I’ll be praying 🙏. Maybe Check into a newer technology called Genesight a DNA test is done to see if his body is ok with that drug. The test will show red, yellow or green. If it’s red then it won’t work on him. A friend of mine daughter was on 6 different meds, she was depressed, cutting herself, violent at times. They found out about Genesight testing and 3 or 4 of them showed red. The meds were changed and she’s doing great even going to college now. I’ll pray it’s not brain damage causing the issue.

Prayers on the way! I’m not sure if anyone can get him micro doses of psilocybin or if he’s able to get time in hyperbaric oxygen chamber but both have shown great success at reversing (retraining?) anoxic brain injuries.
