I live in Missouri. Most people i know are voting no on 5 as am I. If you listen to the ads they sound like New York. "Make corporations pay their fare share so you don't have to". It's backed by dark money and NGO'S. Sounds communist. Please don't compare it to Florida. Not even close.

Yep. I'm voting no on 4 and 5. It would be nice to have zero taxes, but I certainly don't want to have my taxes raised in another area and then not have leverage to change it. How did these two issues even get on the ballot? grrrrrrrrrr.

I don't think it will pass. My family is voting no on both of those too. I'm not wild about Kehoe either, came from the legislature, probably corrupt there too.🙄🤬

Exactly. Missouri doesn't have the tourism that Florida has. Not even close.

Well, it's not that great as it adds lots of taxes to all kinds of services. Missouri doesn't want to cut their budget so this may cut income tax but they'll get you on one or more of the other taxes. We'd be trading one tax for another.

Exactly. This take is ignoring the added sales tax and services that will come into play instead.

It could add 8% or more to the current sales tax rate to make up for the lost revenue.

Who the hell wants to pay 12% sales tax on everything they purchase???

If it passes the Senate and is approved by voters, the measure would give lawmakers three years to decide which currently untaxed goods and services would lose their exemption to generate the money needed to replace the revenue from income taxes. The top income tax rate would decline by 0.01 percentage points for every $20 million in general revenue in excess of the $13.43 billion collected in the year that ended June 30.

This is such a scam amendment with amazing PR work being done to make people think they’re getting money back. They aren’t.

Im paying 10% at my local Walmart. Whats an extra three bucks for two sacks of groceries? Inflation sucks because it increases sales taxes you have to pay. There has to be a better way.

The better way is to stop the taxation insanity.

Sincerely, someone that lived in St Louis for three years and never saw a single tax dollar appear to make a difference.

GOV. MIKE KEHOE: "Look at New York. People are dying to get out of what's happening in that socialist state and that socialist town now!" 💯

"Many states are looking at this policy because they've seen the growth and success of states with the no income tax policies right now."

I was just checking...

No U.S. state is completely free from property tax. Every state allows local governments, like cities and counties, to collect property taxes to pay for public schools, roads, and emergency services.

Lowest Property Tax States

Hawaii: Has the lowest average effective real estate property tax rate in the country at about 0.27%.

Alabama: Features very low average tax rates (around 0.38%) alongside helpful homestead exemptions.

Louisiana: Combines low base rates with large exemption options for primary homeowners.

u/#ummwhat

Having been around the block a few times... Government never gives you anything they don't eventually plan to take back. If they get rid of property taxes, plan on an insane sales tax hike. That's just how it is...

Look I'm all for abolishing income tax, but property tax im not so sure. Like all this does is centralized power in a way that gives you less of a say.

I'd much rather pay income tax than property tax. Income tax is based on profit, property tax based on some random evaluation by the county that is collected without an ending point. That's more unjust than tax on profit.

Property taxes are the primary funding mechanism for local government: counties, cities, townships, and especially school districts. That money stays close to the people who pay it and is spent on the services those same people use and can influence—local schools, police, fire departments, roads, parks, libraries, and zoning.

When you eliminate the property tax, those local budgets do not magically stay funded by some other pure local source. In practice the shortfall is backfilled by the state through higher income taxes, sales taxes, or state aid formulas. Decision-making then moves from the county commission or school board (people you can actually vote out next election cycle and who live in the same community) to the state legislature and state agencies hundreds of miles away. Your leverage shrinks dramatically. One vote among millions in a state capital is far weaker than one vote among a few thousand at the local level.

That is the representation trade-off. Property tax is imperfect—assessments can be arbitrary, and it is not strictly based on ability to pay—but it is the tax that keeps the most control closest to the taxpayer. Income tax is collected and largely controlled at the state (and federal) level. Preferring the latter over the former is preferring a more centralized system, whether or not that is the explicit goal.

The “never-ending” nature of property tax is real; it is a recurring tax on an asset. But the alternative is not a tax-free local government. It is the same spending paid for by a different, more distant tax collector who is harder to influence.

Fuck property tax.

Own your property.

Sales tax instead. Tax consumption, not ownership.

Stop paying income tax and watch the IRS throw your ass in a cage for daring to keep what you “earned.”
