Oswald never even claimed to be outside during the shooting.

At 4 seconds in the film briefly shows the outside of the Texas school book depository.

They knew what happened

But they didn't. They were mistaken. Because they didn't because they didn't do an autopsy they weren't tasked with doing an autopsy. They actually did not know what happened.

They were trying to save his life. Not do an examination. They were not aware of the wounds to his back.
