It's what it takes to run for the smallest office, and the largest. Because anyone unwilling to walk a mile will always be beat by whomever is eager to walk two - doesn't matter if the end of those miles is a pot of gold or a two day old sandwich.
Either spend every free hour on the campaign, or be beat by someone who does. And that's why a supportive wife is critical, not just because you can't be distracted by divided interests and goals derailing things half way in, but because you literally need someone pulling the slack and happy to do so on the homefront because you'll be completely indisposed for a year or more.
That all being said, you're right. We have to do our part. I see too many willing to sacrifice their lives, and too few willing to sacrifice a few years. We don't need people willing to die for their country right now, but we do desperately need people willing to live for it.
