Oz was a bad candidate and everyone knows it. Politics is about storytelling first and foremost. This is why Clinton beat Bush, why Bush "beat" Gore, why Obama beat McCain, and why Trump beat Clinton. The "potted plant" had a better story as a local politician who cared so much about his own failures as a mayor (a position he won by a single vote!) that he carved those failures into his arms. Remove all the partisan politics, and that's a compelling story. And that's to say nothing of all the "ha ha tall man" memes. What story exactly did Oz bring to the table beyond "I say the right things and Trump endorsed me but I'm also a coastal elite carpetbagger who clearly doesn't understand grocery stores"?

What you are referencing is what the Leftists refer to as "the ratchet effect", when they complain about the exact same thing you are complaining about, except that it's about how Democrats claim to work for you (that is, their base) while accomplishing nothing substantive (causing the mechanism to move to the right while holding back leftwards movement, in a manner akin to a ratchet).
