Contrails form from very hot jet exhaust hitting extremely cold air and the condensation turning to ice. Ice cannot, and does not, linger for hours in the atmosphere. Only an aerosol can do that. Contrails dissipate rapidly because ice is heavier than air, does not spread out (because it is heavier than air) and does not turn the sky white.
The science has not changed. What has changed are the online answers from "science" trying to make people believe what they saw 30+ years ago somehow morphed into what we see today. The gaslighting has worked on many.
Contrails are ice. They've always been ice. And will always be ice. Anything different that remains airborne for hours and expands across the sky is something that is not a contrail. Call it whatever you want, but contrail is not it.
