I think they tried to delete them and I think recovering them is very important whether or not a White hat team has them. Because they can corroborate your evidence and a lot of important stuff lives in the metadata. If you can get that information off of the machine you now can prove that your data you captured is good and implicates the technology and machines you are accessing of making those changes.
Had a fun thought today. What if the groups the BOS brought in for their sham audit actually had a hand in making sure the BOS thought things could be deleted, knowing full well they could be found when the real audit hit.

As a former IT gunslinger I can say confidently that whoever deleted the database in question had just the working knowledge of right click, move to recycle bin, empty trash. Hell knowing what operating system these antiquated stone age machines, routers and servers use one could undoubtedly download readily available free ware to crack the admin passwords in 10 minutes. My guess is they have them already. I'll bet they know everything and are playing stupid to expose the people who are in positions to withhold oppose the truth getting out all the way to the top.

They had access to the physical devices and were past any encryption on them. Extracting the passwords is very possible.
