Seriously, we were taught about Juneteenth in Texas schools but every one (I mean every one) treated it as a “you should know that this day exists, and what it means. Moving on.”
Aside from that, very curious as to why it was rushed (it came out of the blue). I highly suspect it was to give the sec a day off
Federal employee here. We got less than 18 hours notice that Juneteenth was now an official federal holiday and we would have the day off. Prediction: a different holiday will be sacrificed in the future.

We learn d about Juneteenth when I was in high school, but only because here in FL, we had our own massacre in Rosewood, FL. A whole town founded by freed blacks that was targeted by the KKK and the Dixie Crats. The whole town was wiped out.

I knew that the Emancipation Proclamation didn't physically free the slaves since they were still under Confederate control at the time, and that they were freed later when Union soldiers began liberating the plantations, but I didn't know they had a specific day commemorating this.
