The same reason they've been deployed to Afghanistan for the last 20 years. Don't forget, NG is 3/4 the size of the Active Army and about half of all the troops deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan since 2003.
And yes, a significant number are Infantry.

My girlfriends brother is as well. They already deployed 1st brigade and his is next. He’s army SF.

Not necessarily. If needed, they will be sent overseas. The difference is that the Commander in Chief will deploy active duty members first. Then a request must be sent to the states to activate their troops (NG) because they are controlled by each individual state, hence TXNG (Texas National Guard), AZNG (Arizona National Guard), etc. The last ones to go are the Reserves, which is under the auspices of the Federal Government. Each component has a different mission. Active Duty (AD) are typically combat units (C) with active support units. National Guard are typically Combat Support (CS) units, they directly support the combat units. And, Reserves are typically Combat Service Support (CSS), they support all components.
Wanna recalibrate that? Fully 70% of NG are combat arms. You're thinking of Army Reserves- which are all CS and CSS (Support) MOSes.
