I suspect the NHL wanted a polite way to back out of the Chinese Olympics without pissing off sponsors, China, and fans, so they're faking it with false positive tests.

A material interruption of the schedule allowed the league to pull out, and the delta and omicron variants spreading across North America not only caused games to be pushed off but made some players hesitant about going to China.

Option 2: Cancel China Olympics due to COVID. Everyone knows it's the Chinese virus even as PRC is trying to deflect and contain. Huge loss of face to PRC.
It is incredible that any country is going to Red China after what they have done to the world with this weaponized virus. If these Olympics go on I don't believe there's any hope left for the world.
Don't get too worked up; the modern olympics have always been political. Being ancient, I recall Sovs and US judges trashing each others' skaters and gymnasts in scoring where subjectively able (thus Nadia's perfect 10).
That's the puppet show; but 'face' cannot be ignored in Eastern or Western nations.
