It's not too difficult. Took me about 20 minutes to remove the starter blocker on my motorcycle when I lost my key fob, most of it was used for removing the fairing. Cut 2 wires, connect them, shrink wrap them, done.
But I'm pretty sure that's illegal in a vehicle that's not your own.
That's not why electric cars suck. It's that they pollute as much due to the mining of rare earth minerals needed, the coal burning for electricity creation, and the fact that once you drive to yhe limit it takes long to recharge even with a high speed charger.
Cross country trips, you're going to have to use standard outlets so you'll be plugged for 6+ hours between charges.
This is another reason why I prefer cars with the least amount of computerized stuff in them.

Penske has ruined indycar racing many a times over. I remember my old man bitching about it when i was a kid.
