If you run a restaurant or cafe, lowering costs without salary or rates for workers means cleaning less, or using worse quality ingredients and stocks. It means working in the dark or undercooking things. It means using cheap and nasty cookware and appliances that wont just do a worse job and wear out quicker, but that also poses a hazard for staff safety. Does anyone think think rotting, filthy and contaminated food sells?

I think that labour is the only cost. If you buy raw materials they were originally free and all the cost came from digging them up, refining, processing and delivering.
That is why the "renewables" advocates are disingenuous. Coal is free. The cost comes when you try and move it from where you found it and convert it into, say, electricity. Renewables are just the same. Wind and sun are free but you still need labour to make the machinery to convert them into electricity.
Labor is the largest cost in a lot of businesses. I guess the owners are supposed to not make a profit then, or their stockholders? Yeah, that’s not happening.
Maybe under a socialist system?
Labor is actually the number one cost for most larger businesses.

Profit margins can be quite small for some items, especially when people can just order it online from Amazon.

On the other hand, I guess you can say Brandon has been running a business all these years, it’s called the money laundering business.
