It wasn't a standard shotgun, it was an improvised hand-made thing, so the ballistics cannot be compared to a manufactured shotgun. Might have been low-velocity shrapnel cobbled together from shards of glass, or metal, or even rocks... who knows. If you look at the weapon used, I'm amazed that it fired at all.
The video I watched of the shooting he turned around after the first shot, then the second one went off and his shirt went in all directions like he was hit will pellets, nails, whatever before falling down.
IF this is a real pic of him on the ground he was not shot with shrapnel or he would be a bloody mess, especially in a white shirt.

Honshu, the biggest of the main four islands of Japan. It would seem, going by this picture, that the blood is still where it should be: Inside his body.

Supposedly his heart and neck is where he was shot. If this is Abe and he bled out like they say, no pressure bandage would keep the blood from flowing out, and his color would be white as paste. No rush to get him to an ambulance! Comm denoting a white hat operation?
The videos I saw screams a movie setting. Did you see the video when the actor shot the 'homemade' gun? A gun blast would make any security detail jump frantically to action. There was a security detail there that stood there with hardly a sense of urgency. Then another video showed the purported removal of Abe to a helicopter, except they used a moving giant blue tarp to hide everything. No body was seen being loaded in the helicopter. Why the secrecy and hiding his transport? That is, if Abe was really moved to a helicopter?
Also note that Abe was not the current PM of Japan, he was the former PM. Nevertheless, he is said to still have a lot of influence in Japanese policy making. So, what does this mean? Could he have been put under protective custody to keep him from being harmed? Could his presence be used behind the scene to manage Japanese politics?

I haven't looked much into this (busy) but from the one picture I saw it was some cobbled together double (extremely short) barrel pistol type thing. Did I also see what looked like 2 shotgun shells in the chamber?
If say it was an extremely shortened type of shotgun barrelled type weapon, using a conventional 12/20G cartridge, even having large shot in the cartridge, this thing would have no choke at the muzzle.
The spread would be insane, uncontainable. To save me time how far away from Abe was he roughly?
Just going from this picture, this isn't the result of someone being shot with any type of shotgun ammunition, even a sawn off type using extremely short barrels imo.
