I had a graduating class of about 150,none were fat by today standards. A couple kids were a little overweight, but none outright fat like today. older people, some were fat,but not that common. Most people in our area had physical jobs miners, logger farmer....... No such thing as a 44 oz big gulp.
Don't blame the big gulp, it's lack of physical activity. I drink a big gulp everyday and weigh 185 pounds. I also do Jiu Jitsu 3 times a week like clockwork.
There is a guy I train with who lost 160 pounds in a year and a half just training BJJ with some light weight training.
I initially weighed around 215......actually went down to 175 at one point which is lighter than I want to be and I actually had to gain weight to get back to 185 which is perfect for me.
People just need to get off their asses and break a sweat a few times a week, doesn't even need to be extreme....go walk a couple of miles every other day.
I think you're correct. Lack of physical activity. Too much time in front of a computer/phone/TV.
I drink an energy drink every day, and probably at least a liter of cola. And sit on a computer at least 8-12 hours a day.
I have a small lunch and a moderate dinner. Sometimes a snack at midnight like salsa or guac.
165lbs / 6 ft
You can do low activity and still have sugar drinks, as long as you're not a piggy with everything else too.
Exactly right! Also, the population's diets have gone to crap, too. Family's used to eat more home-cooked meals, but now with the mom and dad both working, take-out and restaurants have become more popular destinations.
It's definitely a combo of exercise, diet and media brainwashing.
It's much more than just that... Yes, that quantity of sugar is toxic, but there's more to it.
Sugars swapped with sweeteners
Replacing good fats with seed oils (butter -> margarine, etc)
Increased exposure to chemicals; cleaners, pesticides, herbicides, etc.
Decreased physical activity (because that does play a role)
All these things (and likely more) each play a role in the shift from how society looked back then to today.
I grew up in the 80s, we had ONE fat kid and everyone made fun of him, he was Fat Teddy. Clearly fat shaming worked, because no one else was fucking fat because we didn’t want to be picked on.
90s I was the fat chubby kid through middle school, 165 in 8th grade. Almost passed out at first 7th grade football game and my coach made fun of me for years which motivated me. In high school I didn't know it was fasting but I fasted all day then went to football practice, only ate 1 meal a day mostly healthy stuff. I stayed 165 all through high school and college. I still occasionally fast or keto diet. Yes fat shaming worked for me.
Studies show fat shaming works for almost everyone. Other than a small percentage of otherwise undesirables.
Yeah, I grew in the city so there were not so many physical labor jobs. Physical activity really makes a lot of difference. But everything (except obesity) stated above is quite true for this era. The fat people weren't quite as blubbery as they are today.
