Per the media Russia has been in full retreat since before they even showed up.

I don’t have any Russian news providers but I’d say the referendum tells us all we need to know. The American and Ukraine media just keep lying as much as they can. I heard today on I think fox (radio short news) some bullshit about sabotaging Russian recruitment centers. Fox just casually supporting terroristic acts like it’s ok. Ukraine is on its last leg not the other way around.

It's all Fake News bullshit. Everything they've said from day one has been misinformation. Russia withdrew from the Kharkov area to consolidate their defensive positions in Luhansk, Donetsk and the Kherson region. The Khakov area is unpopulated and nothing more than cow pastures and farms. With the limited number of soldiers that Russia was supplying, it was really a 1 to 3 ratio with Ukraine forces, it made sense to consolidate in the areas that were most important. They did this to secure the referendum. They succeeded and now Novrossiya has passed the referendum and President Putin has signed into law the acceptance of these regions into the Russian Federation.
Russia now is no longer limited by Russian law governing military special operations. No longer is the Russian government under these terms. From now on Russia is able to use the full weight of their military to end the hostilities Ukraine is committing against Russian territory. Russia now legally views Ukraine as attacking Russia and occupying Russian land.
In the coming weeks I suspect Russia to start their offensive against Ukraine. I'm also inclined to believe Odessa will come under Russian control and become part of the Russian Federation, as well. Ukraine will inevitably become an inland country. The question is how small of a landlocked nation will it become? Will it return to its 1654 size or some greater landlocked version that existed from 1654 to 1917. Certainly, the energy blockade being enacted against Russia will add to Russia's resolve to ending the hostilities in Ukraine and assuring a neutral Ukrainian state to which Russian oil and gas will flow once again.

Several regions in Ukraine voted to join Russia, western media is calling it an “illegal” election (they’re the experts on that subject, I guess), Russia is working around the nordstream issue by using undamaged portions of Nordstream II, and Putin is still reviled by people who have no idea what’s going on.
The Russians have been a little thin along many parts of the frontline. The Ukros with "help" from NATO have been feverishly attacking while taking huge losses in manpower and equipment. The Russians have been withdrawing in a mostly orderly fashion on the kharkov front, while the Ukros have a little success in the past few days in Kerson sector where they failed earlier in September.
The UKRO losses are staggering and have pretty much thrown their last reserves into these offensives.
The Russians will be coming at this with a whole new level of warfare within the next few weeks.
i will say this..my wife is Ukrainian and my sister in law lives in Russia (st Petersburg)...you ought to hear it at my house Buhahaha...Both claim the other is brainwashed..sister in law says Putin is tring to minimize civi casualties but patients is weraing thin with the constant intervention by the US making the situation much worse. Wife says to keep going a kick Putins ass...gets interesting when they are on the phone...Dont understand half of what they are saying but you can get the general drift lol..sister in law says there will now be no peace deals in the near future. Russia just officially signed documents saying 4 regions now are part of russia and an attack there is an attack on russia. If the russians are "retreating" areas, it is because they are just leaving and not retreating like biden did with billions worth of military equipment in afghanistan.
