I read about this happening, maybe not the specific details, but the gist is true if not all of it. As far as I know he definitely did some version of this story.
The fact that there are multiple versions of this story, each with differing details, tells me this is fake.

It’s just like the story of the old lady/man at a drive thru of McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Burfer King etc, who was honked at by the car behind them so they paid for the food of the car behind them and then took their food plus their own just to teach them a lesson. Because then the car that honked had to go thru the drive thru again to place their order again. That would never happen. The restaurant would just take their order again while they were at the window. There’s a dozen versions of these stories, all of which are totally fake
Suit yourself. However, the story is NOT fake and has been extensively documented and covered widely.
Facebook posts are not extensive documentation nor do they constitute wide coverage. Find me one legit news story about this and I’ll believe it happened. Until then, this is just another urban Facebook legend with apparently a little truth behind it (according to snopes, if we want to consider them a legit source - I know I don’t).

This story is true, this was on the news weekly for months and months while it was going on (late 80's or early 90's). Trump was constantly in the news on the East coast for years before he became a national celebrity.
It's true. He paid the fine for years. Then when they upped the fine per day he agreed to take it down and asked to donate the accrued new fine they agreed and he took down the pole then had the hill built.
Remember reading about it on Reddit before but it was super AstroTurfed. Listen back when Ron Paul was still look over there, and this would pop up on today I learned a couple times throughout the years. People love the story back then
