Pause??? Is this a stunt to get people to use their cards, so they can later start up again, review the purchases and then go after those of us, who used to be careful?? We are not that stupid!

Do merchants have any say as to how their business is categorized? I'd love to buy a gun from a neighborhood book store, pet store, hardware store, etc.

When you sign up for a merchant account the service provider asks questions about your business. The answers determine your "code".
Your business model might change after you're all set up, rendering the "code" obsolete.

Same in IL right now, we're already getting some injunctions but they're probably hoping they can scare plenty of people into registering by the deadline to get "grandfathered" in before it's ultimately struck down.
