10-year-olds found working at McDonald’s until 2 a.m.
More than 300 minors, including two 10-year-olds, were found working at McDonald’s later and longer than the law permits, a Department of Labor investigation found.
The big picture: Child labor is on the rise in the U.S., and the federal government announced a crackdown earlier this year after tracking a 69% increase in illegally employed kids since 2018.
In the last fiscal year, 835 companies employed more than 3,800 children illegally, Labor Department investigations revealed.
Driving the news: Three separate franchisees that oversee more than 60 McDonald’s locations across Kentucky, Indiana, Maryland and Ohio, employed 305 children "to work more than the legally permitted hours and perform tasks prohibited by law for young workers," the department said Tuesday.
The investigations into Bauer Food LLC, Archways Richwood LLC and Bell Restaurant Group I LLC are part of an ongoing effort to stop child labor abuses in the southeast region, per the department.
The two 10-year-olds employed by Bauer Food LLC were below the minimum age for employment.
They prepared and distributed food orders, cleaned the store, worked at a drive-thru window and operated a register, the Labor Department said. One of the kids was also allowed to operate a deep fryer, which is prohibited for workers under 16, the investigations found.
Bauer Food LLC said in a statement that the two 10-year-olds are children of a night manager and "were not approved by franchisee organization management to be in that part of the restaurant."
"Any ‘work’ was done at the direction of - and in the presence of - the parent without authorization by franchisee organization management or leadership," the company said.
By the numbers: In all, the investigations led to $212,544 in civil money penalties against the employers.
What they're saying: "These reports are unacceptable, deeply troubling and run afoul of the high expectations we have for the entire McDonald’s brand," Tiffanie Boyd, senior vice president and chief people officer of McDonald’s USA, said in a statement.
"We are committed to ensuring our franchisees have the resources they need to foster safe workplaces for all employees and maintain compliance with all labor laws," Boyd added.
Meanwhile, the Department of Labor said:"Working in a kitchen late at night near dangerous cooking equipment is a reality for many adults in the food service industry."
"But finding 10-year-old kids in such a work environment is a cause for concern and action," it added.
"Child labor laws exist to ensure that when young people work, the job does not jeopardize their health, well-being or education," Karen Garnett-Civils of the department’s Wage and Hour Division said.
Archways Richwood LLC and Bell Restaurant Group I LLC did not immediately respond to Axios' request for comment.

I think ALL 3 companies need to be investigated as to WHO OWNS THEM and trace the companies linage...WOULD BE MIGHTY TELLING as to WHO THE REAL OWNERS ARE...me thinks they are NOT American Business people...
Just sayin'!!!
Probably screwing then on pay too
Damn rich kids --- with their shoes.
Tough living in those ages.
Imagine the dark ages.
Be grateful what you have today 🙏
Given that Clear Labs has unambiguously found human DNA in (an admittedly small) fraction of McDonald's food products, I shudder to think if maybe working there might not be the worst fate children suffer from that vile chain.
I always use this as an example of the fake fact checkers. If you look, they'll point to a satire site and say the rumor originated here, when in fact the satire site itself was merely exaggerating the very real scientific investigation. The fact that human DNA may have been legitimately found in only 0.4% of the food, doesn't mean that we have no reason to be concerned. If it was intentional, the company would obviously endeavor to keep it within allowable tolerances so as not to spark a wider investigation.

It makes more sense that its due to subpart safety conditions at the food processing facilities. You're not gonna find an article about it every time some illegal loses their arm in a meat grinder...
Small businesses were destroyed/eliminated by the lockdown. Big businesses were allowed to, as part of the loyal comrades/soldiers/cabal, employ child slave labor because they would run under the radar and were part of the Good Old Boys’ Club and could be trusted to stay mum.
At McDonalds there's a good chance they're IN the burgers.
Not to take away from the seriousness of the subject, but I suspect this is an AI-generated image. You can tell by the mangled hands.
I saw that, too. But this image is posted all over the place, so I don't know if that adds or subtracts to the validity.
I did notice that the girls had other physical attributes that seemed very real, thus lending more credence to it being a real, authentic photo - or mostly real.
Their faces are sunburned, they are covered in dust, under eye is red-rimmed, all have dry, parched, and wind-blown hair.
There is excellent detail on their clothing, shoes and socks. All different, but similar styling.
Dresses are dirty, one is torn showing the pattern of the under dress through the hole, and they have matching red rough spots on their arms and hands.
Regarding the mangled hands, take a look at this to see what happens to your hands when you shuck oysters with a sharp, curved knife:

If you've ever shucked oysters, or clams, that's what your hands would look like.
I suppose if it was proven that the picture is older than the debut of AI, then we could safely say it's real and accurate.
Have you seen many images done by AI? All of those details and more are covered. It's freaking amazing, frankly. The one area I have seen where it is still quite weak is with hands. Sometimes it puts 6 fingers, or mangles them like they are in this picture. The two girls on the right, for instance. Look at the hand between them. It looks like two parts of hands, and both would go with the girl on the far right.
My comments are not to take anything away from the horror of children being used in such a manner. Only to emphasize the need for truth and accuracy.
I agree. Their hands are strangely mangled. But the rest looks so authentic.
I want to believe it is real! The advent of A.I. is really opening a Pandora's box.
I don't know if it's AI generated or not, but there are many similar pictures of children working in factories and coal mines. Children.
Oh, I know. It's horrifying.
They're not actually AI generated , I found the photographer by reverse image search, his name is Lewis Hine and he took a series of photos of child labor
Did you find this exact photo amongst his collection? I don't doubt for a second that he took many photos of the horrors of child labor. But this particular picture looks suspect due to the hands being exactly how AI mangles hands.
I'm guessing you have never shucked an oyster?
Nope. I can honestly say I have never shucked an oyster. Do you have a lot of shucking experience? I'm not even sure what shucking is, except I would surmise it means "opening." I will go look it up in a dictionary.
yes it's opening the shell and dig out the oyster. Those shells are very much SHUT and do not want to be pried open, hence the knife. And it takes strength to pry them open, again hence the cuts on the hands! Kids obviously don't have the strength of an adult and that's why I got major beat up shucking them oyster. AND the shell also is very sharp and cuts the hands as well. It's NOT fun but the oyster is delicious!
Isn't it tiny though? Like, hardly worth all that work?
Triple white privilege threat right there...
What a bunch of racists... obviously takin' from the black man.
I can feel the privilege oooozing off of them... they should be paying some kind of reparations or something...
Wouldn't surprise me at all. A lot of legit business interests are big end users of illegals. Meatpacking, agriculture, hotels, construction, landscaping, the list goes on. The huge corporate factory egg farms are among the worst for using slave labor. I would even bet a lot of politicians get fat envelopes under the table from industries that rely on a large, cheap, and expendable labor force.
I had a recent job with a large, well-known manufacturer. I dealt with a lot of incoming product and noticed that some stuff was coming in from very dubious sources at fire sale prices. Wouldn't surprise me a bit if it was from sweatshop labor.
How is it that McDonald's is the most pervasive fast food chain in the USA and people still misspell and mispronounce it?
