At least this made sense at one time. Schools went into recess (summer into early fall) to allow children to work the family farms for a period after planting season through harvest. This was back in the day when a teacher was actually an educator, not an indoctrinator.
Except that teachers have to get their continuing ed in the summer and prepare for their next year's classes. They're definitely not "off". And they work 10-14 hour days a lot of the time during the school year. For mostly crappy pay. If you're looking for a career, don't become a teacher.
