The Iliad is great, but I always liked The Odyssey better.
Isn't the Odyssey the same people just later on down the adventure or something?
Illiad is the story of trojan war, odyssey is Odysseus's journey home after.
My homeschooled kids read both.
In the original language? Cool !
Haha, no. But they spend their last three years translating Caesar and Cicero from Latin, so zero guilt.
Also Based ChadDad is teaching the young Based ManChild the ancient lost art of orienteering. For 17 times the Basedness.
Before I was 10 I used to judge the quality of the sci-fi I read by how many inches thick the book was :)
Needless to say, Dune came out pretty high.
Ancient texts, gotta love em.
I read recently the gnostic library, the nag Hammadi library, the Kolbrin, a 1865 french book on "werewolf psychosis, gouls, vampires, witches, drug use and serial killers" what a fucken eye opening read.
You think people are nuts now?
Wait till you read about people in the past.
You think Elizabeth Bathory was bad?
Wait till you read about Gilles de Rais, nobility of Brittany and close ally to Joan of Arc.
Wait till you read about Tiberius and the other Caesars, child torture-murder was sport to them and Gilles de Rais wanted to outdo them.
He confessed to torture-murdering an average of ~120 children a year for 7 years straight.
What was the title of the French book? Is there an English translation, or is it only available in French?
The Book of Were-wolves by Sabine Baring-Gould
You can read it for free here: https://sacred-texts.com/goth/bow/index.htm
Ah, The Iliad...so grand...
I read this when I was in elementary school - the school didn't make me, I just saw it sitting on my Dad's shelf so I read it, and then The Odyssey.
Earlier this year I was cleaning out my parents' home because they've both passed on now, and there were those books! So now they are in my house, waiting for my children to discover them someday!
In the original Greek?
Getting audio books now.
Lattimore translation is a great translation but it is dated. Check and see if the audiobook you got is the right translation as that can change the text a lot.
The audio book I have is "The Illiad performed by Charlton Griffin" and the translation has been Lattimore I'm pretty certain.
So many books, so little time.
No should'ves, just do what you can in the now.
Lattimore translation is best
"SING, goddess, the anger of Peleus’ son Achilleus
and its devastation, which put pains thousandfold upon the Achaians,
hurled in their multitudes to the house of Hades strong souls
of heroes, but gave their bodies to be the delicate feasting
of dogs, of all birds, and the will of Zeus was accomplished
since that time when first there stood in division of conflict
Atreus’ son the lord of men and brilliant Achilleus..."
One of the best written and engaging books I have read recently is Joshua Lewis Chamberlain's account of his civil war service "Bayonet Forward". The level of writing skill and descriptive power is incredible.
Plot twist: son is in middle school
