I don't believe there is much of a chance of that. Abbott is a chameleon through and through. He was on the Texas Supreme Court. Rove found him and Bush appointed him. Then he was a Bushie for quite a while. When he won the Governor's office he alternated between a Bushie and a Trumpist.
He got really good at determining which way the wind blows. On one hand he will build gimmick barriers on the border (shipping containers, and now buoys) like he is doing something, but on the other he won't take the harsher steps that require true leadership. Like turning the people around at the border, or building a real wall.
He is one hell of a politician, but after covid he should have been vulnerable. Unfortunately Beto ran against him and there wasn't a good enough republican that could primary him. Given a choice between Abbott and Beto, Abbott wins every time.
It is notable that Abbott didn't really take any position on the Paxton impeachment. I imagine that is because Karl Rove wrote that hit piece on Paxton in the WSJ. Note - the article is behind a paywall, but I was able to read it in Firefox in a private window:
No surprise. We know that SOMEONE is benefiting from the massive influx of illegals. I could easily see NGO's and fake charities being used to play "hide the money". It's all part of the Homeless Industrial Complex.
Traitors. All of them.
All in one place for collection when the time comes.
Yes - my thought as well. Plus keeping them in one area is brilliant. Keeps much of the crime that always follows them in one area.
That was my first thought.
Excellent point. Plus, we get to expose yet another corrupt, black hat politician.
Sticky grrr! And I was hoping their Governor had been routed back to our side! 🤬

Might as well merge Mexico with the US at this rate. There's already 100 million of these migrants living and breeding in the US since the 80s

Praying for the earth to open up and swallow it
A city of chattel for this "developer" to control and sell as he pleases.
Also from Spencer regarding the developer:

Gave over 1 million to Abbott and the wife gave, as well. 🤔
Well they are arriving in the numbers of large cities, without bringing the infrastructure and cities with them . . .
feature not a flaw -- no coincidences
