In 1986, Dwyer was wrongly convicted of receiving a bribe from a California firm that had been awarded a lucrative State contract.
Throughout Dwyer's trial and after his conviction, he maintained that he was innocent of the charges levied against him, he insisted that he had been framed. He was one of two who stood accused yet whilst his colleague, Asher, was being offered 1 year of incarceration – Dwyer faced 55 years and $300,000 + of fines.
Decades later, the prosecution's primary witness, William T. Smith, whose testimony was largely used to obtain Dwyer's conviction, admitted that he had lied under oath about Dwyer taking a bribe in order to receive a reduced sentence.
Dwyer was on the brink of uncovering a longstanding sex scandal at Penn State university, the very same college his son attended.

You know. There needs to be serious mandatory penalties for perjury and lying under oath. For everyone involved. Regardless of the case or the individuals status in relation to the case.
As it stands the only ways people are called to account for lying and potentially ruining someone’s life. Is if they piss off someone important who decides to make an example of them.

Is the Penn State sex scandal that he was going to blow the doors on, the Jerry Sandusky one? A quick search shows Sandusky was there at 1986 and won asst coach of the Year, but it didn't become public until ten years ago.

I remember the space shuttle I was in undergrad at the time. That was wild. I don't recall anything about this Dwyer guy. Seems like a big one to have missed.

Good example why lying is a major sin. The person lying may not know the end results of their lies. I've seen a lie destroy a marriage, a lie that put families into poverty, a lie that got someone fired, etc.
