Indistinguishable fires happen on surface ships sometimes. Called a Class D (phosphorous) fire.
The only protocol/remedy for that kind of fire, is to jettison overboard and let it burn itself out at the bottom of the sea.
So, ironically, they'd already be in the "protocol" position if that happened.

Submariners put up with lead acid batteries in spite of the health risks of leakages from combat, some subs were refitted because of the wiring was coated with PVC insulation but here and now a lithium battery powered sub??? It will be like the vaxx of the deep sea... Davy Jones standing by in 3.....2.....1.....
If I were assigned to that boat I'm immediately request a transfer to a garbage scow. No way would I want to be under the sea with those batteries. It's a death sentence if they ignite.

What happens when you have a hot battery fire. And you know they will. You're in a submarine with no ventilation or fresh air. This is stupid. What was their nuclear power plant meltdown called. It's this but x10 worse. THIS IS STUPID.
A fire like this would consume all the oxygen in the boat atmosphere and hypoxia would set in on the crew pretty quickly. Any firefighting they could do would be impaired by diminished capacity. And the end would be pretty quick.

Not all lithium batteries are the same chemistry, phone batteries are LiPo and will swell and catch fire if punctured, traction batteries and UPS are usually LiFePO4 which don’t catch fire.
But but the global warmingzzz...when the batteries burn they’ll make the ocean boil.
