Study: Thousands of Companies Are Monitoring Every Facebook User
A recent study by Consumer Reports, in collaboration with The Markup, has unveiled the extensive scale of data tracking aimed at Facebook users. Some users in the study were tracked by as many as 7,000 companies.
Dumped it years ago - wish I'd never joined. Hotel California: you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave.
The whole system seems corrupted. If my understanding is correct our data is bought and stole for millions in profits every year but you and I see $0 from this profitable business.
Only elites and celebrities are paid for their likeness.
They use our actual data but we get nothing.
Bc we have been asleep and have felt powerless. That's all about to change.
Great analogy!
I quit drinking and facebook three years ago, two of the best decisions in my life.
Same here. Dumped it all many years ago and hoping I left a small enough footprint when I left.
I don't use Facebook or Twitter. But we shouldn't be slapping ourselves on the back. Every single post on this site is monitored and most likely linked back to your real identity. I doubt there are many places online that aren't being monitored. I don't trust VPN's either. If the establishment didn't have access to them, they wouldn't be allowed to operate.
Agreed
"The studyās data came from two main collection types: āeventsā and ācustom audiences.ā The latter involves advertisers uploading customer lists to Meta, including email addresses and mobile advertising IDs, to target ads on Metaās platforms. āEventsā describe real-world interactions, like website visits or store purchases, facilitated by Metaās software in apps, tracking pixels on websites, and server-to-server tracking."
He always looks like he's struggling to keep the lizard hidden.
Really strange looking 'person.'
What is LifeLog for $800, Alex?
If you sign up with Facebook do you have to give vital info? like race, size, gender, political preferences? Or can you just sign up without giving that stuff? I hate FB, I've never signed up, yet I do use FB marketplace, do they have my "stuff"?
last i heard you need a cell phone# which is their most desired piece of information, since it's used as a primary key on a database to link you to many other things.
You don't have to give much info except your age. But if you are tracked for more than 24 hours they can fill in the blanks with a estimated profile. I would love to know Big Mike's profile.
Sure, you can, but that's like walking into FBI headquarters and expecting to not be surveiled
You need an email and I think phone number is optional. I canāt remember. Most people use their real name, first and last. Iāve had several accounts at different times with my real name and other times using a fake name. You have to be over a certain age, I think 14 but you set a random birthday. You will have to confirm your account by email. Thereās a way to keep anyone from seeing your activity. I have a fake name account to keep up with local information and look for local for sale items. Iām not concerned with my email and phone number because thatās public information if you search hard enough. I was trying to find an old coworkerās phone number and found her email address and every cell phone number related to her, probably her kids. Do a search for anyone you know online and the information is out there. It also lists your child, parents, in laws etc.
Digital battlefield where the Sunday funnies shape the hearts and minds of anyone that fakebook allows to see my posts!
Facebook? What is this Facebook you speak of? š My wife had to use it in her real Estate business, she's retiring soon and closing her page down. Finally!
I haven't been on for a long, long time. Went on yesterday and looked around and said to myself: This is just stupid.
If you shop at companies online or signed up on any website or app you might need to find to request they donāt sell your information. I donāt remember what sites or stores but Iām always looking at my account and the privacy settings. I do select donāt sell my information but honestly I doubt it matters. If china can get dna from pregnancy test and you have had lab work or seen a doctor your information is available to anyone that knows how to find it. (I donāt remember details about china and pregnancy tests I think it was from another country. Read it here in the last few years.)
Some of the ad stuff I have no problem with them having certain info about me. This is because I like a lot of the entrepreneurial related ads that appear to me on Facebook.
Without certain information about me. They would show me crap that I donāt care about.
It's your data. Wouldn't you like some compensation for it? How much are these companies making selling your data to meta? That's the issue.
Not really. Because to actually make sense and use the data actually takes skill and time.
Just because someone has my name address and interest doesn't do anything. They have to understand how to create value with that data.
If all it took was data. Every company would be rich. A lot of companies even with data go out of business.
That may be. However, do you know what data about you is being sold? Do you know who it's being sold too? These companies need to be transparent and they should get permission at the very least. Maybe it's in the fine print but I doubt it.
That's the thing about selling data.
If someone spams me when I know I didn't ask for it. Their brand reputation is destoryed in my mind forever.
So it becomes worthless.
As people become more educated. It's going to become harder to use data.
Or we may find ways to protect the data gathered on us and the internet spaces we want to participate on. Let's be honest we all know who developed Facebook (ie Lifelog).
The biggest thing is to prevent the CBDC and Censorship.
That's what they want our data for.
I kinda don't care what they know, bc they can clearly see I'm a badass, hard working, successful, not gay, healthy, active, beef eating, normal person, and guess what, I'm not ashamed and I'm cool to let literally everyone know that, evil or not
Yes, but wouldn't you like to be paid for the information about you given to multi billion dollar companies? That's your data. It should belong to you. We are all getting ripped off once again. Plus, we should have control of what data is out there and who gets it. That's a fair system with sovereigncy, checks, balances and transparency. Not transparency of you but of those who seek and sell information about You.
We should also be able to see an accounting of every dollar our government spends every year. Generally we are cattle and getting f***** about all of it
