My wife and I were driving home from the Adirondacks on the NY Thruway yesterday and saw a horrific accident as it happened, about 50 feet in front of our car! I saw the car drifting to the right, and thought, "oh, he'll steer back", but car just continued to the right, hit the guiderail at the end, crushed the rail all the way to the concrete barriers that are ironically there to protect the toll apparatus! The driver must of fallen asleep at the wheel, or "died suddenly". Debris flew out into the road, and I was glad that we were in the left lane, because a large piece of the guiderail flew into the right lane. We stopped just ahead, called 911, and I started to go back to help, when another vehicle stopped, where a passenger was an EMT. He ran back to the scene. I saw many people at the scene, and decided I wouldn't be any help. We left, and as we left, the car burst into flames! Based on the severity of the crash (we could see that the front of the car was TOTALLY crushed in), we wondered if the passenger(s) could be extracted before the flames! It was the worst car accident I have ever seen happen!
Now here is where it get's weird. I searched online yesterday and couldn't find a news item about it. I still couldn't today, but found where someone mentioned it on Reddit. So the question is, are details being withheld for a reason? (or am I just too conspiracy-minded :) ) I can't recall anything about the vehicle other than it was a car.
Vaxident
Agreed - Vaxident....
OR..... EV batteries caused the explosion part, and that's bad for the narrative and EV agenda.
Baffling.
I’m stealing that!
Everything you have a need to know is presented to you on the TV...
I have recently started looking for a train horn setup for my truck. I travel hiway a lot and there is an insane amount of "distracted" drivers lately.
2 lane hiway, 75 mph speed limit and people swerving completely in oncoming lanes has almost got me 3 times this year alone. never like this before. Not that a train horn will help a head on collision, but it "might" for cases like yours.
Lord, Please help us!!
Please share what you end up finding for a horn solution!
I know a guy who bought 4 aftermarket horns. He just paralleled the wires and voila- deafening horns of doom from an unassuming sedan kek.
Possibly it was someone far more important than any of us and the scenario was going to be embarrassing?
Sorry-- I just saw a video of trudeau and I feel snarky
The "burst into flames" part is weird.
Cars (regular, gas-powered cars) don't generally burst into flames upon collisions.
There was even a MythBusters episode to demonstrate this because they wanted to bust the myth due to Hollywood scenes in movies.
Maybe it was EV.
But ... having said that, I have seen 2 different situations where vehicles were on the side of the road and the engine compartments were in massive fiery flames.
Both were older SUV's, so not EV's.
Neither looked like they were in accidents -- just looked like they pulled over (probably due to the fires).
What can cause fire to burst out like that?
A fuel line leak spraying onto the hot exhaust manifold can ignite from the heat.
I was in a Lanscaping truck that burst into flames under the engine compartment, while we were driving.
We pulled over and jumped out of the truck with little time to spare. The bed of the truck had old wooden sidewalls and was completely loaded with grass clippings.
Within a minute or so the entire truck was engulfed in 20-foot flames.
Edit: And yes, just like in the MythBusters episode, the fuel tank did not explode, it just added fuel to the fire, igniting the load of grass in the truck bed.
The fuel seals don’t like ethanol. They are better now than before.
conspiracy minded doesn't mean you are wrong...
probably a vaxident.
NY? Buffet of perscription medication is a likely culprit
I hope in the future if you see someone drifting like that, you start honking like a maniac. Like you said, they might have been falling asleep and you might have been able to wake them.
It happened so fast there was no way to warn him (or her; don't know anything about driver).
Thank goodness you are both ok and no other cars involved! 🙏
I wondered if that were the case. Have you heard or seen any reports on it yet?
Still nothing I can find, other than the mention on Reddit. I've sent an email to a local TV station to ask about it; they reported on other accidents that day.
Interesting. Please let us know if you hear anything about it.
I'd call the police or sheriff in that area and ask for the report, or if it was reported at all? Of course as they eventually arrived. Don't look for media. Tax payer funded workers like police and sheriff must make a report of their work, time, use of vehicles etc. Just call the police in that area and ask.
Instead of asking for a report, you could offer information as a witness...then casually ask your questions.
I've been trying to reach the fire department to the south, which appeared to be the first to respond, but I'm not able to get anyone on the phone.
A run of the mill accident in NYC is probably not going to make the local news.
The anon doesn’t mention he was in NYC when it happened. He was “coming back from the Adirondacks” where the majority of his drive was mostly in upstate NY.
I'm not familer with that area, I assumed the NY thruway, was close to the city. But still this doesn't sound like news anywhere.
Crazy. I did a search and found nothing either. It should have at least made news in the town it occurred.
The closest town is Glenmont, but there are no exits there. Closest exit is at Selkirk. We saw a fire truck coming from the south, possibly from there. Too late to do anything about the fire. The car was smoking for a few minutes before the flames.
A crash like that burst in flames , emt there to save the day ,, if he could save the life , but was there non the less , you’re right , here in San Diego it would have been leading or close to leading story !
After being unable to find any info on the accident, I paid $15 to get the report from the NY Thruway Police. Three interesting items in the report: 1) There were five people in the vehicle (I thought it must have been a solo driver). 2) No deaths or even serious injuries (modern safety devices in cars are apparently awesome!)(the obviously got the people out quickly since the fire started after the crash pretty quickly). 2) The report indicates the occupants (driver?) reported he swerved to avoid hitting another vehicle. Of course, my wife and I know this is not true because we saw the whole thing :)
A Google search of the driver name did not pull up anything of note.
So, as a former reporter, here’s how we’d get the local and latest news: when I came in in the morning to the newsroom, we’d have a list of local agencies and departments to call to hear what happened overnight. We’d do this later in the day, too. Each and everyday. Without fail. The policeman answering the phone, if he had anything, would read a statement or fax it to us. That’s how we became aware of local accidents, arrests, drug busts, crimes, etc. We also listened to the scanner and would stay on top of anything coming across that was important. If it was something big, we’d send a reporter out.
I have noticed this myself the past few years that accidents are no longer reported.
Newsrooms, both radio and television, are usually owned by corporations now and I suspect that accidents are now off the table for news. It must have come from someone high up, because you have to understand that calling around to get the latest from various departments was standard protocol forever. Local news stations should be reporting local accidents and other news. Try a local radio station in the area—they might have info. Also the State Police in the area will have a statement or press release prepared. It’s their job, even if it doesn’t get reported.
Serious accidents often make the local TV news here, and usually show up in some news article. So far, I'm finding nothing on this. Other accidents yesterday are reported all over the place, especially when they cause a huge backup. This one apparently kept traffic backed up for a couple of hours, based on the Reddit comments about it.
Targeted individual?? The media would normally love this kind of story.
