Particle accelerators have been around for many, many years and are responsible for some of the most important discoveries in particle physics. Up until CERN, they've been pretty innocent attempts at understanding the nature and composition of sub-atomic particles.
That being said, aside from CERN being down for the past 24 months for upgrades, they've done plenty there. The question is whether or not what they're doing is innocent scientific research.
A lot of signs that something genuinely sinister is going on. I wish your statement "It's a machine that does next to nothing" were true based on some of what we've seen.

It removed 4.7 billion from citizens tax dollars, The Large Hadron Collider took a decade to build and cost around $4.75 billion. Most of that money came from European countries like Germany, the UK, France and Spain.
