I have been to several Holy Week events this week, including an overnight prayer vigil, and I've cried so much this week that my eyes have been puffy for two days. Maybe it is the state of the world, but I've never felt so in touch with our Lord and what he endured as I feel right now. I am looking forward to a jubilant celebration this weekend. He is our Light. He is risen.

"The fact that God would be willing to sacrifice the way a friend lays down their life for another when other religions have God(s) wanting others to sacrifice for them in sometimes cold ways.

I just love thinking upon that thought. The mere fact that Christ turns the status quo on its head for the people.  They expected a conquering king, yet the unthinkable occurred. He went and gave himself up out of love, for his friends, as a meek and humble man.   A sacrifice that shook the darkness to its very core.   Something all of us can dwell on and remember."

I recommend you look up the song 'His Hands' by Kenneth Cope. It's from the album 'Greater Than Us All', and every song is about our Savior and they're all beautiful. It's an older album from 1989, but you can find some of the songs on Youtube, and I think you can still buy the album on Amazon. It's one of my favorite albums of all time, and this is certainly an appropriate time to listen to it.

I mean the God of the OT asked for some pretty cold sacrifices. Can you name a sacrifice asked for in another religion?

In the Old Testament God required animal sacrifices for sins because of the original sin of Adam and Eve. They had to bring their best animal not a sick one. Jesus (who is God, without sin) came to be the sacrifice for all sins once and for all. Praise His Holy Name! Belief and repentance is required to receive salvation (eternal life).

Why is the death of Christ something to be celebrated? Shouldn't that be considered a bad thing?

permalink save report block reply
▲ 22 ▼

Christ died for us to live. His suffering isn't to be celebrated, but his resurrection is, and it couldn't have occurred if he'd never been crucified. That is why this is Good Friday. The darkest moment turned to light in an instant.

This post will explain it a lot better than i can...👇👇

Today is Good Friday.

It is the day that we recognize our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ making the ULTIMATE SACRIFICE for ALL of humanity.

The GREATEST love is to lay down your life for your friends. Jesus did that when He was BRUTALLY beaten, and battered to the point of being unrecognizable. He took EVERY stripe for US.

Jesus sweat drops of blood knowing the BRUTALITY that He had come to earth to face, it was all part of God’s plan. Humanity NEEDED a Holy human sacrifice to atone for sins that would inevitably keep us SEPARATED from God FOREVER.

Jesus came to earth as God in human form, lived a PERFECT SINLESS LIFE, and WAS that sacrifice, so a BRIDGE could be made for US back to the Father.

When Jesus gave up His Spirit on the cross, he said “IT’S FINISHED”.

He was saying THE BRIDGE has been made.

Jesus said “I AM THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE. NO ONE COMES TO THE FATHER BUT THROUGH ME.” - John 14:6

THE GREATEST GIFT IN THE HISTORY OF MANKIND.

Will you ACCEPT His gift?

Yes!

FRIDAY: It’s not really Good Friday-it’s an agonizing day filled with torture-leading to painful crucifixion: They stripped Jesus and put a scarlet robe on Him, and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on His head. They put a staff in His right hand. Then they knelt in front of Him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said. They spit on Him, and took the staff and struck Him on the head again and again. After they had mocked Him they took off the robe and put His own clothes on Him. Then they led Him away to crucify Him.Matt27:28-31-SATURDAY was somber-silent-a day of mourning &SUNDAY (not easter) but RESURRECTION! The best day EVER! JESUS IS ALIVE! Join your church &celebrate-if you don’t have a church-VISIT ONE! take your family &dive into the arms of this amazing Savior who faced the cross-defeated death &ascended to heaven FOR YOU! GOD LOVES YOU!♥️

Why do people say Christ died for our sins? What does that mean?

permalink save report block reply
▲ 11 ▼
– Gods_plan_trumps_all 11 points 2 years ago +11 / -0

It means the only way for us to be reconciled to our Father the Creator is by a pure sacrifice. Christ Jesus of Nazareth was that pure sacrifice. By His death we now have a way back to the Father. By his stripes we are healed. Those who believe on His name and follow Him are given that opportunity. Those who deny this simple truth will have no place with the Father.

every human makes mistakes. with every sin we grow more distant from godliness. but through Christ, the debt has been paid, and we can be reconciled with God.

An ordinary human could never make amends for sin to God who is infinite. The offense is literally, infinite. ONLY God could make amends. So the Son of God, Second Person of the Most Blessed Trinity, was sent by His Father to earth as the God-Man Jesus Christ (truly God and truly man) to offer Himself in place of every member of the sinful human race, unable to help itself. This "solution" was foretold even in the first book of the Bible, after the sin of Adam and Eve, and Christ's death was spoken of by the prophets in detail, especially in the writings of Isaiah about the Suffering Servant. God pursued sinful humanity through the ages which culminated in the gift of His Son. He is still offering us His love and mercy and a call to turn from sin and accept the salvation His Son has won for each of us.

I really want to have this kind of faith, but I don’t. I’ll share the best I can do. Jesus came and spoke and what he spoke resonated as profoundly true to people. As his popularity grew, he threatened the powers that be, because his message contradicted the current hierarchy. Jesus was then threatened, tortured, ridiculed, and crucified and it wasn’t enough for him to succumb to the powers that be, or enough from him to change his message, to lie, or to turn from God. He stayed true. Then, he was reborn because the truth and the loyalty to God gave him new life. So I imagine that he died in order to teach us how to live.

God had to sacrifice himself to himself in order to provide a loophole to rules he knew we could never live up to. Cool, huh? He tried different things at first. Killing everybody but Noah and his family as a do-over, for example. But then he had this one crazy idea..

I’m on an island among Christians, but I think you make a good point. That’s why I believe God is omniscient, but in that He knows all POSSIBLE future outcomes. God tried to steer humanity towards Him with certain methods, the flood, the exodus, but people continue to turn. I believe God saw these things as ways to help people turn towards Him, and it was possible. God foresaw a path where humans would come to repentance for those things, but it didn’t happen. In the end God had to come down Himself to solve the problem, which was always His ace in the hole, but He would have preferred not to do it that way. Does that make sense? God is never surprised by anything, and will always make it work, but He would have rather had humanity turn earlier, but since we have free will we continually choose ourselves over others. Think about it like a web of possibilities, God knows the infinite possibilities, nothing surprises Him, and He reacts to humans perfectly. But us humans with free will keep on screwing up so in the end He said ‘I’ve given you enough shots at it, I’ll do it myself’, and brings Jesus.

You sure are, island-wise, at least among modern Evangelicals/Fundamentalists. I was just talking about this to someone else on here last week. It's an interesting conversation to have. It sounds like you might subscribe to open theism: https://greatawakening.win/p/17siA13gBi/x/c/4ZA1LBkJQjw

Oh man, what a great read (the back and forth I the comments were great too). I’m glad folks are open to discussing the Christian’s Gods omniscience - the character it would invoke otherwise lacks greatly when taken at face value, a huge early red pill for me - but I can’t help but think these conversations only exist to provide the God of the text some way of saving face. Thats my obviously completely cynical take on it, though.

I still Dr Heiser there does a LOT of water carrying in this regard, as pointed out by other commentators.

I’m somewhat an open theist, but God will make sure to make all predictions about the future come to pass, no matter our choices. He made sure Jesus would come, and He will make sure Revelation happens as foretold. God has predetermined certain events, but chooses to let us make decisions, then reacts.
