Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evolving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
I watched Dune Part 2 last night. I rented it from the video rental store (yes, we still have those where I live). It sort of ends on a cliffhanger, so I imagine they are planning more movies. I haven't read the novel. I've had the novel for close to 30 years, but I'm such a faggot that I haven't read it yet. I don't know if this take is closer to the book or not, but it has Herbert's family members and Kevin J. Anderson involved with these movies. Like the aspect of using the prophecy and basically using the religion of hope to manipulate the Fremin to overtake the Harkonnen. Was that in the novel?
Now I want to read it. I finished up the Wheel of Time series a while ago my wife & life long friends (told me the TV series was the most egregious in terms of artistic lisence they have seen, many not making it past the first episode & some not even the first five minutes) encouraged me to read the series to figure out why so many hated it.
If you have time to dip into fantasy collections, even getting it on audio is a great way to enjoy the story.
Dune is likely to be my next fantasy series, though The Way of Kings by Sanderson (finished up the Wheel of Time at Robert Jordan's (author) wife's request) is what I was looking at too.
I had a hard time in my teenage years getting into the Dune movies. I should get a copy of Dune 2. Thanks for the reminder.
Oh my gosh. Wheel of Time is TOO LONG. One book is like a thousand pages or so, and there's about butthundred of those books. I cannot do that as I am a slow reader.
I completely understand. Each audio book is about 20-25 hours. I played them at 1.5 speed & that helped quite a bit.
That was the biggest reason I didn't start the series. Once I finished book one, I had to know how it progressed & ended.
I enjoyed many of the Drizzt series, though I haven't finished them. They were episodic vs an amazing epic that flowed. It was more like one almost 12k page book broken up into large chunks.
Audio with the ability to follow along with Kindle may be a good option. Though it is a hefty tale to tackle for sure.
I never thought I would have taken on these books until the last couple of years. Glad I did though.
So, my wife is excited. On the TV she has a breakdown video going of symbolism in a recent Eminem video. “Houdini” On one hand I’m happy. On the other hand she is so far behind. She says she “loves” it.
This is me.
https://vigilantlinks.com/2022/07/eminems-album-cover-decoded-as-fans-mock-design-the-worst-album-cover/
AT LEAST she’s clued in that symbolism is present. I’ll take this as a small melancholy victory.
We all start somewhere & if this is it, avoid the desire to firehose her with more. Those in my fam & wife's fam, who were beginning to wake up, got overloaded when too much came too fast.
They need to ask for more, or have a desire to learn more. Probing questions is best. Let them teach you what they know & then ask questions that lead them further on the path of truth that they need to find answers too.
Once I came along, the weird cousin/in-law in my wife's family had someone to talk to. The firehouse was directed at me, and since I was aware of the content they were discussing, it didn't blow me away. Though I was able to help keep that hose off others & interestingly the fam took more notice of the truths he dropped because it didn't come at them, but rather the information splatter they heard was now able to be processed better & then they could interrupt "our" conversation to ask questions. Luckily I had been blessed to have gone through his stage as a teen & was able to keep his eagerness focused on my "mistakes" (ie directed to speaking to me) when I explained things that I was also looking into.
Fire hose effect shuts down curiosity. Allowing those waking up to "be the expert" or educate you is a very effective tool.
It's a baby step fren... I'll keep praying for her great awakening...🙏
I have some very very unfortunate news frens.
Undine53, a respected and valued veteran of this community, passed away suddenly last week. I have been in touch with her daughter who posted this yesterday (she was intending to post here, but didn't have the details at the time about the correct forum).
https://communities.win/c/General/p/17te51q836/undine53-has-sadly-passed-away-d/c
I am very sorry for Undine’s passing.🥺 We often exchanged messages and we were in really good terms. I pray she found a nice spot behind the Pearly Gates.
All my condolences to u/UndinesKid.🙏🏻💐
ohnoooooo. my condolences. she was one of the good ones.
This is sad news. Prayers go up to her family during their time of need and loss. I really liked her a lot. 😔🙏
I sent you a text..,
An anon I've stayed in touch with reached out with this very unfortunate news...thank you...I was not going to participate with this account but I have to, like it's an obligation. She was a good one.
Undine, I'm still not sure what that even means exactly, but wherever you are, I'm sure it's nice and I expect you are at peace.
--PS
Thank you for logging in psalt. Although I lurk regularly I don't post here much anymore, however, like you, I was compelled to log in to let the anons know about Undine, who was a well-respected and beloved fren to so many.
I was fortunate to have known Undine offline - although not long enough to have had a chance to meet (we are in different countries). She was a memorable individual who will not be forgotten.
I wish more anons could connect offline as friends - this forum is a special place, however, hearing an anon's voice, and speaking to them in depth and getting to know them, for me is perhaps the greatest blessing of being an anon. I will miss Undine dearly.
🙏🐸👋
Undine is a water nymph. Mum loved Arthur Rackham's illustrations. Thanks for the kind words.

We must not give up. Evil must be snuffed out and scattered to the winds. Every day I find another example that spikes my blood pressure and pisses me off.
Here's on example I saw today: https://x.com/WallStreetApes/status/1809749506961076372

Whatever happened with the investigation of cocaine Mitch's sister-in-law's death (She died in a Tesla in a pond)?
Oh right, wonder what happened to that.
The AP propaganda hub was reporting she was intoxicated.....
I saw a headline that said she stayed on the phone as her car sank... but couldn't find the article
Boy, I can't keep up with the plot lines. And the dying-in-the-pond reminds me of the Obamas.
I wonder who their new chef is? Think they're cooking for themselves?
"Someone from Haiti" pops into my mind.
For what they're cooking for themselves, or someone to cook for them?
Either one seems to work.
Question here, why hasn't Russia taken Ukraine already?
Because Russia's goal is not to take Ukraine.
The spoken goals are to stop Nato expansion. de-Nazification and freeing the Russian majority areas being opressed by Ukrainians.
Additional unspoken goal is to bleed the Bankers dry, cut off their money laundering, biolabs and child trafficking in Ukraine, and prep it for the precipice.

I didn't think he was that old, though he maybe that is a brother that looks like the guy I knew. I knew the son & daughter well. Their daughter is dedicated to the truther movement.
I had no idea there was a communtiy like this. If it is the guy I am thinking of, he has always been pretty based.

How to get confidence like President Trump:
It's worth noting that confidence is often earned. You build confidence by winning and keeping the promises you make to yourself over and over again. It's a tough life that not many people really want, hence why so few people are actually that successful.
I'd recommend the following adjustments:
1.. Always pick the option you're most proud of, even when an alternative seems easier. Who are you at your best? Be that person when no one's looking.
2.. Doing the right thing should never be an exception. Change your identity to accommodate the practical changes you want to make in your life. If you want confidence, put yourself in stressful situations and come out on top. Do it because you're the kind of person who succeeds in those situations.
3.. Correct your self-talk. Never think anything bad about yourself. If you observe things you aren't proud of, quietly change them and let that be that. Self criticism should be constructive, not destructive.
4.. Change your body language. Put your chest out and smile. Be open, warm and present in the moment and truly feel like you belong wherever you are. People will subconsciously notice and accept you if you accept yourself.
5.. Change your own narrative. You can take the same exact life and tell the story of a winner or a loser by emphasizing different parts of the same exact chain of events. Why let yourself be a loser? You can just as easily interpret your life in a way that gives you power.

I can really relate to number four, because I watched a TED talks a while back about how to stand up straight. They showed that even in the most primitive society that people who put their heels together and point their toes out it automatically let your body align in the best possible way. It may feel awkward at first, but it’s very efficient when you’re standing in line and waiting your turn. Try it out.
I hold my phone up in front of my face when I’m standing in line, so I’m not looking down, or hunched over. Not only is this good for your posture, it’s good because you’re paying attention to your surroundings. it looks a little weird, and people sometimes think you’re videotaping them, but you’re not. your head is up and your eyes forward
I couldn’t find the original TEDTalks, but this is a good one anyway.
Hope you don't mind another one that I have found worthy:
You are your own harshest critic/judge. But use this to work on improving what you will do the next time.
"Character is what one does when no one is watching".
Grandpa Dog esq
Aka, integrity.
Always used that definition with my students.
And an oldie but goodie. "If you can't run with the Big Dogs, sit on the porch."
"If you can't cut it, don't pick up the knife."
Grandpa Dog esq
That Grandpa Dog esq is a real gem of a hound.
...you would have loved him...
I'm sure he "Ain't nothing but a Hound dog" and that makes me love him already.
...doggy winks...
