I’ve met an awful lot of Russians over the last 25 years. They generally do not have a sense of humor, as they see humor, and smiling, and laughing, as buffoonish, immature, and contemptuous. When they say “good morning”, their facial expressions are as sunny as a person just informed that their mother and dog were murdered together. They’re as full of humor as a heart attack. They think Americans that smile, laugh, make jokes, have happy, optimistic dispositions are stupid, childish morons. When I’ve explained that Americans view a lack of a sense of humor as a character flaw, they just about spat on the ground. All of them. When I’ve queried them on their extreme dourness, they looked befuddled that someone would view their default setting as abnormal, then they all said some version of “we’ve suffered”, to which I asked if they could point out a country that’s lived free of suffering. Our motto is “land of the free, home of the brave”, while their motto is “and then things got worse”. There’s a big gulf between American and Russian culture, woke crap aside. So I’m happy to see that they’ve made light of an otherwise awful event.
The Russian people we have known were unlike those described here. My husband worked with people from many countries. One from Russia needed various tools, so my husband took him to a huge tool store and helped him choose the best tools for the job. The man was amazed at the choices and different features. They were co-workers and our families were close for years. We never saw the characteristics you saw. I guess Russians, like Americans, vary based on their personal experiences in life.
