I got two different forecasts on here:
https://www.tropicaltidbits.com/storminfo/#14L
One going over Tampa and the other going directly over me. I hope it comes my way though because my little sister is in Tampa.
Ski- does it seem unusual to you that there’s been several this year originating the Bay of Campeche — I grew up in Nola and have lived in Texas (west and central for the last 48 years) so I don’t pay that much attention always but I recall most started in Atlantic and moved into Caribbean usually— or am I just not paying attention
Now that you mention it... I've been in south Louisiana for almost 50 yrs. Hurricanes normally start in the Atlantic and move northeast. ish. I have seen one or two start in the gulf, but they usually go to tex mex. again northwest ish. Why are these guys moving east and northeast, opposite normal?
Yeah I just noticed it in the last few months cause I follow Texas Storm Chasers and we desperately need rain but even though they start there they track northeast— seems odd or I wouldn’t have noticed
The Bay of Campeche is usually most active in June/July. By this time of year the storms usually originate near the Cape Verde Islands as lows come out of Africa.
I'd say it's about the normal amount that have come out of there but the entire time I've lived down here, everything that's come out of there has either not hit us, or if it does, is at the most a tropical storm or a very weak cat 1. This particular one is definitely out of the norm. I can't help but think there is something nefarious as play here given the timing.
That is something else I’ve noticed— which is why we here in south Texas keep hoping for one to head our way and dump 5-6 inches of rain— we’ve been in drought conditions for years and I have a private well 😑
Awe what a good big sibling!
My family in Tampa are booking a flight out ASAP. Yesterday they were not concerned. Tonight is a different story. Hope your little sister does okay.
Update on your sister? Hope everything was ok.
Thanks for caring! She ended up coming and staying with me for the storm. She's safe and sound and hopefully her apartment will be okay.
Good to hear.
The worst case scenario would be for the eye to pass just to the north of the entrance to Tampa Bay, resulting in maximum surge in the bay. This situation occurred in the mid 1800s, producing an estimated 26 feet or so of surge. Imagine what that kind of surge would do to an area with hundreds of square miles of land less than 20 feet above mean water level today! My mother lives in Bradenton at an elevation of about 18 feet. I don't think her area could get a surge over 20 feet, but it's possible she could have standing water in her place (ground floor of a condo). I believe she is still better off staying, as long as she has a weeks worth of no-cook food, and water. The madness of trying to evacuate with hundreds of thousands of people on the roads doesn't make sense, and no guarantee, unless you totally leave the state, that you will be in a safe area.
Praying for your mom’s safety friend.
Thank you. She turns 93 in December. My sister lives with her to help take care of her (but she is very active and still drives!). I'm hoping the storm rains itself out in the Gulf, so it cuts off its own source of energy, but if it keeps moving east, that won't happen.
Thank goodness your sister is there, that has to be a big piece of mind. Hope for everyone in Florida it’s a fast moving storm and doesn’t linger over the state.
I just checked out the potential storm surge map for the Tampa Bay area, and Cat 3 storm surge would be really devastating! The entire East Coast can be viewed here: https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/203f772571cb48b1b8b50fdcc3272e2c/page/
Hurricanes form in the gulf now and head east? Since when?
Think it is time for people to take out the harpies.

I have a friends in Tampa. The last storm they got 4 feet of water in the house. So sad.
The storm is definitely upon us! Pray this wakes up people. I finally told my spouse about cloud seeding and I got the “you’re crazy” look.
Tell your spouse to look it up. There are videos. Easy peasy. Lol JK, I know all about stubborn, silly relatives. Ugh. Keep praying. 🙏
Kek. Thanks friend.
