Remember the days when you'd do a search...Altavista, Dogpile, Google, Yahoo... and get THOUSANDS of relevant results?
These days, the results SUCK - which leans hard into the idea that the net, for researching any number if things is closed off and dead.
I'm not even talking about "conspiracy" crap - I mean like work related research or tech based searches. I remember I could literally spend DAYS going through a singular search inquiry on a given subject and have a deep, thorough understanding of the material.
Now? Everything is some schmucky watered down bullshit, with more red herrings than actual information - AND the "Chandler Effect" (Say you searched for Rachel Chandler, you'd get nothing but friends and Rachel from friends ir Chandler from friends) - and really, really obscure red herrings too... Now you get some android looking NPC mutant asshole with a fishing rod and 4 results. GTFOOH
This Internet today is total bullshit...they locked it down like China net.
YES!!!! Oh it was WONDERFUL!!! I was working in the digital preprint industry, and I was researching constantly, and so proud of my talent for finding the obscure. I could locate ANYTHING. I watched the search engines get turned into mush right in front of my face....
I agree with BOTH OF YOU...it is pretty damn hard also on technical stuff for example programming or engineering design...the "context" is so screwy you get lost in the "mush-mush"!!!!!!!!!!
Good thang I keep ALL my engineering/computer science books...They aren't watered down...they be from the '90s!!!!! And YES, I'm that OLD!!!!
If we are talking old here, my professional books go back to the 70's.

I worked at Cray Research. Remember Fortran, MVS, Sun Workstations, gallium arsenide...? And now gallium arsenide is back in the news. Oh, those were the good old days. I have some old Aviation Weeks that I 'borrowed' from the lobby talking about the F-20 Tiger Shark... Don't get me started... Boston's first album...
You do get the old fart prize!! Mine only go back to the early 80s
Old geeks need love too...We know a thing or two...

Same hereβ¦I remember 1.4β¦MILLION search results. With relevant links wayyy down the list.
When I get annoyed with DuckDuckGo, I drum up Yandex and get a different result.
Yandex is pretty much my goto right now... even ddg is throttled it seems...

Because DuckDuckGo has been captured and they censor results.
I am finding it is really inept at searching for technical information. Like it has blinders.
I just use StackOverflow for tech info searches anymore. Everything else blows.
Brave search and browser
Brave search has also been cucked now too.
If you watch this interview in full, you will find out exactly why the Internet is the way it is now. He actually goes into how Google was forced to play ball (and then obviously started enjoying it)
Tried getting through it last night before bed @ 1.5 and the Zzzz kicked in ... gonna put it on again today while workfagging...
Yes, it used to be so much better. Now it is brainwashing us. I don't pay much attention to the Google AI that's pushed to the top. I get better results on the Russian site Yandex if I type in the right key words.
Remember the days when you'd search for something on Google and get hundreds of different pages of results and could just keep pressing "next" for seemingly eternity? Now it just says "load more" and starts recycling pages/suggestions they already gave you.
