I was stationed at the Pentagon in the 90s for 5 years. I was there for the blizzard we had in 1996 where some places got 2 feet of snow. We had about 1.5 feet around the Pentagon. Nearly everything was closed. I got caught at the Pentagon and didn't think I would make it home while everyone else was driving, so I went across the street to Arlington Cemetery (where I had a part-time job) and clocked in and helped staff keep people out. There were actually a-holes on skis trying to ski down from the Arlington House. They couldn't see the headstones they were about to destroy. People are stupid. I drove home after traffic died down and more salt was on the roads.
If you have ever worked in the DC area and tried driving in snow more than a trace you would know and understand why places like Quantico close. One year when we had only about 4-6 inches it took me 6 hours to get from the Pentagon to Germantown MD. It usually took me 45 minutes to an hour depending on when I left. Traffic is bad enough in dry, sunny conditions. Rain makes it bad, sleet is worse, Snow gives inexperienced drivers the false conclusion that it is safer than driving on sleet, so they tend to drive faster because "I have good snow tires". Then they hit their brakes (which are frozen from the slush) and slam into everyone else.
Remember - the DC area is full of people that have zero experience with driving in snow. There are 175+ embassies in DC. How many of them are from places that have never seen snow? There are also people from all over the country working all across DC - including Quantico, Andrews, and all of the other bases. How many of them came from places where they either never get snow, or are from places where they get so little snow that the local areas simply shut down for a day or 2? Try finding rock salt in Texas to put on roads. When I was in Missouri they used beet juice on the roads. WTH?
This closing is absolutely normal. In fact I've seen it before myself. The people on X saying the base has only closed once before, or the Marines are pussies, or they are faking it to station Marines around DC for whatever reason are just blowing smoke. Everyone closes because of the hundreds - if not thousands - of accidents that will absolutely happen if all of those cars are on the road.
It is only for safety. BTW - Andrews AFB (or Joint Base Andrews) is also closed today. (I can't call it anything but Andrews AFB - my daughter was born there.) I wonder why Andrews wasn't mentioned on Twitter - didn't fit their narrative?

29 Palms is also under enhanced security. Base isnt closed, but there are substantial restrictions on visitors.
