I was given an iPad after my oil was changed, and I yelled out. Are you kidding me? You guys are asking for a tip. I paid you to change my oil. I don’t know what’s happened to this country. I’m so thankful to be back in Montana because the other states forcibly stick that damn thing out the window and expect you to give them an effing tip. It’s so ridiculous.
I do the same thing no matter what business I am at. If they auto expect a 20,40,50% tip they get NO TIP. If at a restaurant and the server is a GOOD one what makes the eating a pleasant and no hassle time (even if there is a small delay from the kitchen end), they will get a good tip from me but, if they are rude, grumpy, snotty, or just never come bye the table for refills or other general making sure needs are met.. NO TIP. I refuse to tip any employee unless they are taking their customer service job seriously. lol
The same thing goes for vacation spot restaurants. As soon as they tell me my whatever sized group is a “party” the tip gets locked in right then. Mandatory 15% is all you’ll get no matter how stellar the service.
You Americans need to cowboy up and get a proper firm grip on this tipping thing. I'm serious. It's out of control. Nowhere else on the planet does tipping to this extent but I'm scared you will infect us with it. Fortunately the tipping spores fall on thin stony ground here.
It went, from years ago, 10% to 15%, now it is around 20-22% way too much money, unless the service is tip top and pleasant while taking good care of the guests.
Mc Donald’s workers now get paid $20/h in California. But they are being replaced with machines or loosing their hours to make up for the mandatory wage increase set by the government here in this state.
I waitressed long ago. You lived on tips. Your "paycheck" covered taxes on income and tips. You didn't count on your "paycheck" to pay for anything. Because of tipping, you get 1/2 of minimum wage as hourly pay as a waitress.
Technically true, but if the amount of tips they receive, divided over hours worked, doesn't bring them up to the amount of the state's 'actual' minimum wage, then the restaurant has to cover the difference. So, no server is actually making anything less than minimum wage.
This largely depends on the state. You are correct that there are states where service workers fully rely on tips as part of their living wage. However here in California for example they all already get their $17/hour mandatory minimum wage.
I used to run a bar. Tried to pay bartenders as much as I could and still pay myself. They got about 8 bucks an hour. I think I paid more than any other bar in the area. They ended up doing ok with tips but I wouldn't know how else to run my business and pay a living wage. Different than minimum wage.
i went into a steak house one time and you order before sitting down. as they tallied up the order they added the tip. i said what are you doing? she said putting the tip on your bill. i said NO you will NOT. if you do that where is the incentive of good service? i was pissed.
not to keep this rolling but i wanted to share with you that my bf will never, ever send his food back, ever. if he orders a steak medium and it comes to him almost raw, he will just leave it. he will pay for it, but he won't send anything back.
we had dinner out one night and my green beans were ice cold, not even warm. so once dinner was over and the waitress came to ask if everything was Ok, i said no, my green beans were ice cold. she cleared the table and guess what. we look up and see the waitress standing in the kitchen doorway with the cook beside her as she was pointing at us. my friend was like, see i told you not to say anything.
The best way to do it is to pay cash. Be prepared to always pay cash. If you have to use the iPad hit no tip. No matter what if you decide to tip because of good service always use cash. I explained that we never put tips on our bill but we give our server cash. Then it is her choice to either share the tip or not. Waitresses especially do not make a full hourly wage and they take all the crap from the customers. They are the ones who deserve the tip and they deserve not to have to claim it
Servers are also taxed on the assumption that they collected %10 tips on their sales. So if you leave no tip at all they still pay income taxes on %10 of your sale. Many do not realize that.
I don't think so. That's how they calculate the federal tax. If you do not claim the proper amount they put extra tax on for "allocated" tips. I've seen it happen but not in a long time. Most restaurants have pos systems that calculate estimated cash tips. You can under claim at mom and pop places but won't get away with that at the corporate places.
It's federal I believe. When I was waitressing long ago - early 80's - they started that crap with tips. You had to add up your tickets at the end of every shift and record 10% ( or whatever the % was then) as tip income. You had zero option.
I don't have a problem tipping but I don't go out often. I visit my daughter's Cafe, so I always tip them well. I get groceries delivered. Big orders. Usually I tip 5 for every 100 I spend. If I do get takeout from the local pizza place, I always give 20%. But they are all kind, hard working people. When daughter complains about rude customers; they are always kinda sloppy people that don't tip. She doesn't have purple hair, tho & finds most people kind & interesting. She loves her work.
I went to buy a cigar from a cigar shop. Turned that little device around and what do we see. The 20% tip. It’s not about being cheap. I’ve gotten the tip thing at medical IV clinics also. The cigar shop said it’s the POS software and to put zero. But it’s an owner operated lounge so yes I do tip. Because I sit they’re for hours watching tv and enjoying cigars. At least they say it’s the software and request I put zero. She’s a little embarrassed by it.
Owner is nice. She’s there with us on her iPad and watching the tv bank hanging out also. She opened the shop herself. I always support small business like that.

Because the “trophy for anything crowd” no longer have the trophy given…now they must ask for it.
I do the same thing no matter what business I am at. If they auto expect a 20,40,50% tip they get NO TIP. I'm not poor
My tip has nothing to do with your service
My tip is part of the massive flex of Being ME
You should see the looks on their faces when they realize they treated me assholishly and I still tip >50%
I always click no tip on the ipad. Why does the ipad need a tip?

I tipped hotel staff in south east Asia, they all looked at us like WTF is this. 🤣
Why do Barista get tip but not the workers at Mc Donald flipping burgers? I'd think that's a harder job.
Mc Donald’s workers now get paid $20/h in California. But they are being replaced with machines or loosing their hours to make up for the mandatory wage increase set by the government here in this state.
Tip?
Where's the text entry box?
"Don't piss in the wind"
You'd be surprised how many times that little tip saved me from embarrassment...
Keep in mind a lot of servers earn like 2 bucks an hour in wages and the rest comes from tips.
So fix the wages.
they did in california (over 20 bucks an hour), they still expect a tip and fast food prices are ridiculous.
All for it. What do you propose?
"Find another job" comes to mind.

Wife and I tip in cash, tell them it's a gift so don't worry about it being taxed. Gifts are not taxable.
If only it worked that way. Govt still counts whatever % now used as tip based on ticket total. She still pays taxes.
I never claimed tips lol fuck em
You still got taxed lol.
So you are saying my tip basically goes straight to the government,** laundered **through a server ?
Yep, or at least a certain % of it, as a tax
That is horrible.

Ok. Point being, nothing close to a living wage.
Even with tips, it's hardly close to a livable wage, in most cases. I should know, because I'm a server.
It’s not servers we’re talking about.

At that point you just leave. NEVER call them out then let them handle your food.
i understand but i was with other people and i didn't want to upset all of them and force them to leave. everyone had agreed on this place to go.
tips are given on the service you receive, there is no incentive for good service if they are given the tip in advance.
not to keep this rolling but i wanted to share with you that my bf will never, ever send his food back, ever. if he orders a steak medium and it comes to him almost raw, he will just leave it. he will pay for it, but he won't send anything back.

we haven't been back to that restaurant.
The movie Waiting is not fiction.
never heard of it. but i'm guessing it has some disgusting things to do with things going on at restaurants? Kek!
One of Ryan Renolds' early movies.

Just another reason they should hate the government.
This is not the customer's problem.
No, it is not the customers problem. I was not complaining about the system. Just explaining it.
Very true.
This varies by state…no?

California waitresses make $17/h. They already get a livable wage yet still expects you to hand them over a 25% cut from your total bill.
I love it when the bring me enough singles to tip a stripper…hoping I’ll give them one some.

The lounge aspect, them providing an atmosphere for your enjoyment, I can see. Sounds like a nice place.

What a great laugh first thing on this momentous day; thanks fren!!
There's a Charley's Philly Steaks in town that earned my repeat business when the cashier outright told me to select No Tip on the card reader.
The food was delicious as well. Check them out sometime.

Its not just about restaurant service.
Ehhhh Trump would never stiff a waiter
Mr Pink doesn't tip
