I guess we're going to have to be ready for all the complaints from senior citizens about having to go out to their closest SSA office for in person identity checks.
I don't think it's going to even matter that most of them voted for Trump, I know there is going to be some seriously angry old people because of this. (No offense to the seriously angry old people here. 😁)
I wonder what the exemption criteria will be for seriously ill or frail people. Many of them simply will not be healthy enough to go to SSA offices. That's going to be a serious bit of workers' time if they have to drive out to do individual identity checks on God only knows how many people.
Please note: I'm not saying that identity checks are a bad thing or we shouldn't do them or the cost and effort isn't worth doing them.
I'm pointing out potential complications so people can be ready when the shit inevitably hits the fan over this. It's better to be aware of pitfalls in advance so we can be better prepared in what we might say to those who will be criticizing the new rules. People tend to say silly things when they're caught off guard, and that never helps with anything.
Online identity checks will continue to be allowed. It's only phone identification that is being terminated. At worst, they'll need to get their grandchildren to help them use the online interface.
I have disabilities and if I have to go to the Social Security office that is far away, the only thing I have to do is call the disability buses and they will take me there. Simple, they should not be complaining.
I'm happy that you'll be able to get there without much trouble.
Someone was kind enough to point out to me that they can still verify their identity online. It's just verification by phone call that they're eliminating.
It's embarrassing I missed that when I read the article. 😳
But while we're on the topic, I'm sure that you'll get people who will argue with you that not every person in the country has access to disability buses.
That's definitely going to be part of their reason to be against this.
I've read another article just now that's going on about how poor people in rural areas are going to be hit the worst. Because of a lack of public transportation and internet access.
I spent a good part of my life living in a place so remote I had to drive 20 minutes to get to the nearest anything around me. It was one of those little country gas stations with one gas pump in someone's front yard and they had their house attached to the teeny tiny gas station. So I know first hand what it's like to be dependent on your own car.
That argument, yes, it's somewhat valid for a good portion of the country.
But no internet access? Really? You don't know anyone with a cellphone you can borrow for a little while? C'mon.
If they can make it to Doctors appointments, they can make it to an office one time to verify their ID. Plus it says they can do it online, which I'm not sure how that's safer.
The same as what, though? The same as the last midterm? The same as the midterm during Trump's first term?
I think it's too far out to say how the midterms will go in 2 years. There's so much that can happen between now and then. I also remember how we were overconfident during his first term and lost the majority in the House, which lead to the who impeachment debacle.
Voting is the same meaning that the elderly still have to get to the voting booth. No more vote by mail (hopefully) by midterm. So the elderly will need to go out of their houses no matter what.
I'm sure there's going to be some sort of work around for those in nursing homes, and assisted living who are not able to get out. This is not a one size fits all situation.
had the same thought about all of this conversation on granny/gramps having to go to ss offices...just have those ss employees get off their asses, and visit the nursing homes, etc!
TBH. I’m just waiting for some Skin and Bone Skeleton from the middle of some rural bumfuck nowhere farming town of like 20 people in the ass end of Texas to lurch into their local Social Security Office now.
Because honestly. A 200+ year old Lich actually existing would be kinda funny. And right in line with the believability of the ongoing timeline.
I mean in my aforementioned example. They’d still be very much alive. I used the term Lich as a humorous reference to them being ancient by our standards. Not that they were literally undead. And yes I’m aware of what was making the rounds on X.
I’m just saying if it actually happened I’d be half tempted to believe it. Given the sheer ridiculousness of other verifiable events of the past decade
The change will apply to new Social Security applicants and existing recipients who want to change their direct deposit information. This is not every bedridden granny out there.
Sorry this is unworkable. Over 11,000 seniors turn 65 DAILY in the US. Read that again. Eleven thousand per day. I am not making this up.
There is NO infrastructure in place at Social Security to handle, in person, the number who want to sign up each day. The mere suggestion is laughable. If you're over 65, retiring, and coming off a group health plan, you're lucky these days if you can even get an appointment at the local Social Security office to go in and sign up for Medicare before your desired start date.
if you're getting ss... it's not that difficult to go to present yourself in person once in awhile. it does a body good to move about... besides.. they're NOT that busy!
Hmm...your saying we actually need id checks to receive funds...strange.
Can't wait till we have final numbers on how much of our taxes actually are allocated to fraud/waste as opposed to being properly spent.
God bless Trump & Elon/DOGE Team; getting sick of the feudal system we were living in.

Thank you! I completely missed that bit when I read the article.
I was sitting here stressing about the possibility of having to locate and pay for medical transport to whereever the nearest SSA is.
Seriously, thanks for pointing that out. I was about to have an anxiety spiral.
I have disabilities and if I have to go to the Social Security office that is far away, the only thing I have to do is call the disability buses and they will take me there. Simple, they should not be complaining.

Thank you, I believe we are in the same predicament, but I know the majority of people must have someone to help them.
If they can make it to Doctors appointments, they can make it to an office one time to verify their ID. Plus it says they can do it online, which I'm not sure how that's safer.
Yes, I know. I've addressed that on several other posts here. Thanks.
Not sure how it's going to get done but you know the voting is going to be the same.
The same as what, though? The same as the last midterm? The same as the midterm during Trump's first term?

Ohhh. Gotcha.
Well, it's either they get out, or just not vote. 🤷♀️
Not going to be fun for the people with 90 year old cancer stricken grannies, though. (Of which I am one.)
Oh. Sorry.
Yeah. She can't get out of bed to go to the toilet right now, much less a SSA office or a voting place.
But, C'est la guerre. 🤷♀️
She's a tough old lady, though. She'll probably make a full recovery by the midterms just out of spite.
Darn, I am sure something needs to be arrange for people like that.
I'll be first in line. I agree this needs to happen. I did all mine on line and never faced to faced anybody.
I'm sure there's going to be some sort of work around for those in nursing homes, and assisted living who are not able to get out. This is not a one size fits all situation.
I sure hope so.
They can avoid complaints of disabled seniors having to visit SSA offices by having identity checkers that make home visits. Problem solved.
had the same thought about all of this conversation on granny/gramps having to go to ss offices...just have those ss employees get off their asses, and visit the nursing homes, etc!
You can do it on computer. I know and have seen.
TBH. I’m just waiting for some Skin and Bone Skeleton from the middle of some rural bumfuck nowhere farming town of like 20 people in the ass end of Texas to lurch into their local Social Security Office now.

You mean like a living dead? Did you see what they were trying to tell people on X that they exist?
I mean in my aforementioned example. They’d still be very much alive. I used the term Lich as a humorous reference to them being ancient by our standards. Not that they were literally undead. And yes I’m aware of what was making the rounds on X.

Thanks for the explanation. So far, I have not seen anyone who lived past 120 (designated age for humans in the Bible after the flood).
My grandma lived till 98, which was ancient. LOL
But the 220-year-olds are real. Look! (eye bleach warning)

LOL.
Bias news from the AP. I got no problem going down to SSA and verifying who I am!
Younger people no problem. There's some elderly who cannot get off bed.
The change will apply to new Social Security applicants and existing recipients who want to change their direct deposit information. This is not every bedridden granny out there.
I can't up vote this enough times. People don't seem to realize it doesn't affect the majority of people already receiving benefits.
Oh good.
Could they be using this as an excuse to do biometrics and face scans?
No idea.
If you live in the area around The Villages, Florida, I would be happy to take you personally to your in-person checkin. Let me know
No I am not. I am by TX in AR. I am not old enough to go there yet. LOL
I will have to drive over 70 miles and try to find parking in downtown Spokane. But I think it's a great idea.
Oh. I am sorry. WA is cluck. No wonder I left.

Online identity verification FTW
They do online. You have to go through the computer and hold up your driver license front and back and your social security card.
Think they are opened 24 hours.
There are 1200 social security field offices in the US. That’s 9 extra visitors to each per day. Why is this unreasonable?
The anger is because of the hours waiting in line even on a good day. More evidence that the government hates us.
You don't have to wait. You make an apt and show up. Even when I was in Oregon, that's the way it's done. No waiting.
if you're getting ss... it's not that difficult to go to present yourself in person once in awhile. it does a body good to move about... besides.. they're NOT that busy!
Some offices are more busy than others. It also helps to have an appointment.
Where I am it's certainly not.
Certainly is about time for this to happen! I love it.
Good.
Hmm...your saying we actually need id checks to receive funds...strange.

Amen. I love it.
Das racial!!!
