Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evolving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way

Cleaning out my fridge I found some lettuce that I had forgotten about. It had been sitting down there for three or four weeks. It looked as if I had bought it yesterday, some really freaky shit going on with our food.
I’ve noticed this also. A few years ago I had bought the little tomatoes in the plastic box. I don’t refrigerate tomatoes because it makes them taste weird. The tomatoes got behind something on the counter for a few weeks. So I left them out as an experiment. After about four months they were not moldy, I tossed them. I have an extra fridge on my back porch, don’t go in it everyday. I had put a jar of marinara that’s supposed to be by a small company. It tastes just like my local Italian restaurant’s sauce. The jar got pushed behind something for several months. When I saw it I tried to open the top to pour it out. Due to arthritic hands couldn’t open, put back for hubby to open. I forgot again, it was in the fridge a year and didn’t mold. I read an article many years ago the person had left an apple on her desk for several weeks and it didn’t go bad. She decided to keep watching it, after several months it was still not rotten. Even if you grow your own food it’s been genetically modified to the point the food isn’t what it was fifty years ago. The old saying, “eat an apple a day keeps the doctor away” isn’t true anymore. Don’t remember the source, they said you would have to eat ten a day to be equivalent to one apple a hundred years ago. That’s because of gmo & depletion of nutrients in the soil.
I don't think the nutrients have gone anywhere, it's the bacteria in the soil that helps transfer the nutrients to the roots. If we rehab the soil and stop poisoning it things will be fine. I'm getting the willies from this Frankenfood, I've tried to avoid it but at this point it's impossible. I love how certain people are like "Just go buy a farm and homestead just like we did!", sure I'll quit my job, sell my house, add two or three hundred grand to the cost of the land and house and grow a garden with a pig. I love the idea but it's out of reach for your average blue collar guy.
Interesting observations! I agree the soil is a major factor. The modern world doesn’t farm like we did for centuries. That’s probably one reason the soil is junk now, plus the toxins used to grow bigger food and spraying the crops has not been beneficial to the soil. Buffalo and cattle can improve the soil tremendously. “They” know this and that’s why they are trying to get rid of grazing animals. Those people that homestead are incredible for making that leap. It’s not for everyone! I grew up in 70s, one grandparent had chickens and hogs, I remember eating fried squirrel & my grandma killing a chicken to cook. The other grandparents farmed tobacco and raised hogs. The old smoke house is still on my property but it’s a storage building now. That set of grandparents & great grandparents at some point stopped farming and worked a full time job. I can certainly understand that, they were not working as hard and making more money. I have fond memories of feeding the chickens and holding new born chicks. I pray I never have to farm or raise animals. out of reach for your average blue collar guy Absolutely! My husband works average of 45-60 hours a week in four days. It’s enough strain on him keeping up maintenance on an 70+ year old house. That doesn’t include cutting the grass on several acres. I haven’t worked in a long time because of medical conditions. Before I used to help keep up the yard and he cut the grass. I keep up the house and keep my granddaughter a few days a week. When you are off work you want to enjoy your family and hobbies.
Look into carnivore diet that cuts out most of the toxic foods. It’s not for everyone and I never thought I’d last two months and I’m fourteen months in. We do get slack sometimes and cheat. You wouldn’t believe how bad you feel after giving up plants then eating them again. There’s many vegetables I can’t eat. Also if I eat certain fruits my mouth burns. Main stream searches generate gov and sites that say it’s the pollen on the produce. I believe it’s the toxins sprayed on them. I was watching a guy from South Africa who is carnivore said he can’t eat avocados because his mouth burns. Said growing up there wasn’t an issue. So much has changed with our food in the past fifty years.
If you have the space for a freezer find local raised meats. We buy 1/4 of a cow about once a year. I want to find chicken & pork locally also. I’ve been buying eggs for a local person that raises chickens.
I’m not trying to push a certain diet! It works for me.
https://blackgold.bz/genetically-modified-apples/
Thankfully I don’t eat apples or any produce much. You would have to find an older apple tree to get non gmo. Even the seeds are genetically modified now. All the trees, plants and seeds at your local garden center are gmo. I wish I could find the apples my grandparents had, the trees have all died. I saved seeds but wasn’t successful. The apples were so bitter it would give you a stomach ache. They made the best apple pie and stewed apples. I read several years ago India will not buy apples from USA because they are gmo.
The biggest change I’ve I noticed is in bread. I love baking my own but can’t always and since I switched to healthier bread a few years ago, I have to eat it quickly or freeze/refrigerate it within days. I could have a loaf of chemical-filled bread in my cabinet for 3 months and it never molds. I can’t wait for fresh garden vegetables.
I have noticed the same thing, even the supposed better breads like the sour dough bread exhibit’s the same qualities not just the wonder bread crap that I refuse to ingest anymore.
We experienced the same thing with bread. I rarely eat bread. Recently I walked down the bread aisle in Walmart and it smelled like toxic chemicals. Forty years ago we loved that smell when we passed by the local Merita bakery. Now it’s so gross. I made toast for my granddaughter with white bread. The old me wants to taste what I used to love. My stomach hurt so bad for hours after eating one piece of butter toast. I can eat tortillas with Mexican food and I’m fine. Dave’s bread used to be good but expensive. It’s been sold so you have to watch ingredients, still better than the white bread. I haven’t eaten Ezekiel’s bread, most health experts say that’s the best if you can’t get homemade. It’s in the freezer section. My daughter cooks sourdough bread, tortillas, pancakes and a lot more. I would like to learn so when I want some I know what’s in it. One problem bread in USA is the way the flour is processed. In Europe they still grind the wheat the old fashioned way. Some people that bake bread a lot get flour from Europe or grind the wheat (can’t remember the term for the part used to make flour).

C. H. Spurgeon's Evening Reading (March 30th)
"Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the Lord." — Lamentations 3:40
The spouse who fondly loves her absent husband longs for his return; a long protracted separation from her lord is a semi-death to her spirit: and so with souls who love the Saviour much, they must see His face, they cannot bear that He should be away upon the mountains of Bether, and no more hold communion with them. A reproaching glance, an uplifted finger will be grievous to loving children, who fear to offend their tender father, and are only happy in his smile. Beloved, it was so once with you. A text of Scripture, a threatening, a touch of the rod of affliction, and you went to your Father's feet, crying, "Show me wherefore Thou contendest with me?" Is it so now? Are you content to follow Jesus afar off? Can you contemplate suspended communion with Christ without alarm? Can you bear to have your Beloved walking contrary to you, because you walk contrary to Him? Have your sins separated between you and your God, and is your heart at rest? O let me affectionately warn you, for it is a grievous thing when we can live contentedly without the present enjoyment of the Saviour's face. Let us labour to feel what an evil thing this is-little love to our own dying Saviour, little joy in our precious Jesus, little fellowship with the Beloved! Hold a true Lent in your souls, while you sorrow over your hardness of heart. Do not stop at sorrow! Remember where you first received salvation. Go at once to the cross. There, and there only, can you get your spirit quickened. No matter how hard, how insensible, how dead we may have become, let us go again in all the rags and poverty, and defilement of our natural condition. Let us clasp that cross, let us look into those languid eyes, let us bathe in that fountain filled with blood-this will bring back to us our first love; this will restore the simplicity of our faith, and the tenderness of our heart.
This felt like it was directed at me personally. Thanks so much for posting it.

just got what appears to be a brand new JFK $0.50 piece from the PO... I haven't seen a new one in ages... We're they just releases from treasury?
I did a search to see if they were still being minted and this is ths AI overview that came up.
AI Overview
Yes, Kennedy half dollars are still minted, but primarily for collectors and numismatic products, not for general circulation, though the Federal Reserve may still order them for circulation. Here's a more detailed explanation:
Minting History: The Kennedy half dollar was introduced in 1964, following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
Shift in Focus: In 2001, the U.S. Mint stopped producing half dollars for general circulation due to declining demand.
Collector Focus: From 2002 onwards, the mint has focused on producing Kennedy half dollars for collectors, including annual coin sets and other numismatic products.
Circulation Resumed: In 2021, the mint resumed striking Kennedy half dollars for general circulation, with the Federal Reserve ordering them for use in commerce.
Current Status The U.S. Mint is not currently producing new half dollar coins for circulation. Production at the Denver and Philadelphia Mints has been suspended to focus on other coin denominations.
Where to Find Them: You can still obtain Kennedy half dollars from some banks for face value, and these half dollars are quite common.
Collector Products: The U.S. Mint also offers Kennedy half dollar products for collectors, such as coin sets and bags.
Silver Content: Early Kennedy half dollars (1964-1970) contained silver, but later versions, minted since 1971, are made of a copper-nickel alloy.

What will happen with Israel in the end? Will they reign as the global superpower or will they get wrecked?
It’s in the Bible, but they literally have their entire temple taken over by Satan. The remainder will flee to Petra and have one last opportunity to acknowledge and accept the Messiah.
Which Bible is it in? I've never opened a bible in my life
New King James version.
The book of Daniel, Ezekiel, Revelation
Edit: and a couple books in the New Testament
Where's a good place to buy it
You can buy one at Walmart, or Amazon or just go to any books store. You may even find one at a Goodwill. But they’re not that expensive. If there’s a nearby non-denominational church they generally have Bibles for free they’ll give you.
Edit:
The Bible, particularly the New Testament, discusses the "end times" or "last days" in passages like 2 Timothy 3:1-5, Matthew 24, Mark 13, Luke 21, and the Book of Revelation. Here's a more detailed breakdown:
2 Timothy 3:1-5:
This passage describes "perilous times" characterized by people being self-centered, ungrateful, and unholy, among other traits.
Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21:
These chapters contain Jesus's teachings about the destruction of the temple, the signs of his return, and the end of the age.
The Book of Revelation:
This book is an apocalyptic text that uses symbolic language to describe events leading up to the "end times" and the final judgment.

The main thing that sparked my interest is the return of Jesus. Q said saving Israel for last and that the end will be biblical. Now I keep wondering what is going to happen with Israel. I think a war is going to happen in the middle east, destroying Israel, and Jesus will come back to rebuild it and the Jews will accept Christ as the son of God.
Who knows.. only GOD knows.
I don't think anyone can predict the future and I'd worry more about saving my own soul (through Jesus Christ) before worrying about what's going to happen to countries or races of people.
will get rek't ¯\ _(ツ) _/¯
I broke another one at Walmart yesterday. I know Walmart sucks but if I need a hard drive or usb drive I will go in there and get one. I find it fun to purchase electronics from my local Walmart store. I have to ask permission to purchase something because I am viewed as a thief according to the employees. All customers are according to them. So at times they will have an electronic that has one of those magnetic locks around it and therefore I can take it up to the self checkout and pay for it.
I show this to one of the kids on how to allow the other person to break. After I pay for the device it is legally mine and even if they still have it in their magnetic protection… so after I pay for it I ask a worker if they could unlock it for me, she stares at me and walks off. Ok… so I explain to the kid that she is what we consider a NPC or possibly a mRNA vaccine one who has no ability to comprehend aka zombie… I am always very calm. Well another walks into frame because in the self check out area at Walmart it has become a zombie zone of mindless Walmart zombies who will roam in circles with no abiiity to have any expression..
The second one at least started to attempt to take off this magnetic surround and could not figure it out, so I narrate to my kid that is is what a DEI hire is…
The first one attempts to get me to walk my cart into her as I am leaving and I stop and narrate more to the kid about how this one is a NPC and we should be mindful of them as we leave.
She broke.. it was glorious.
One at a time is all we can do.
