God gave us dominion over all the animals and said that they shall be meat for us. Between farming and conservation efforts, i think we're doing a pretty decent job making sure there's enough meat to go around.
There are limits on each game animal and the game wardens are very active. Processing plants will not process wild game without tags and will turn you in. Rifle is much more humane than trapping.
What would be unfair is a wild west approach to hunting where game was slaughtered for fun and left to die unappreciated. Or, an unsuccessful knife attack that wounded an animal and left if vulnerable to another predator shedding it after a run for its life. A rifle in lawful season is the most clean and painless way to harvest. A bow hunter usually isn't there to miss either and it is a challenging option for those who want that or for those who could use the food beyond what rifle season may afford.
Fish & Wildlife come up with these estimates annually based on how many harvested animals are reported into the harvest log systems.
E.g. (insert whatever state) hunters telecheck 250k deer harvested = appx ~2.5 million deer estimated deer population for that state.
It's not a perfect system, big +/- point spread... but the F&W tend to lean conservative in their population estimates so the figures they put out are relatively good enough imo.
Im just spitballing here, but Im guessing the meme was made out of laziness. I just did a search for "deer population" and the first several pages are all maps and graphs. Not very eye catching compared to the critters picture. Great opportunity to make a new one I guess.
I appreciate these post but be forewarned the mods want to keep thing specifically Q related and may interact with you or delete these. Just a heads up. Happy hunting fren!
It's way off. For the 5 sub-species (Eastern, Rio Grande, Merriam’s, Gould’s and Osceola) of wild turkeys alone the 2019 estimate was 4,966,127 to 5,001,127. That was with 8 states failing to report counts that year.
There are at least 4 flocks of turkeys with 8 to ten turkeys in each flock with in a 1/4 mile area of my house. I ride the teails in both directions and see them all the time. 40 plus turkeys.
I'm as hardcore hunter as anyone here. I hunt with a long bow, muzzleloader and rifles. I live in mule deer whitetail deer and elk habitat.
I have watched blue tongue destroy the whitetail population 3 of the last 10 years. The odd part is that 30 miles away in similar habitat the same deer are THICK......and ours are all dead.
Elk and mule deer are doing reasonable. Our predator management SUCKS. The fish and game guys are lost on reality.
Using a long range rifle is a bit unfair, now hunting with only a pocket knife gives the game a fighting chance.
It's not a fight, it's food. It was never meant to be fair.

Do you hunt?
I sure do. Its deer season right now and just put some fresh meat in the freezer.

Only if it's a Swiss Army knife, may need to corkscrew a bears liver, never know lol.
Unfortunately this picture shows 1990. What are the current numbers? But I wanna go hunting anyway lol
Get out there and start counting
Who counted in 1990?

I have no problem with the system. I have my permit to hunt, and I have gone hunting. My question is about the image being 1990 not 2025.

I don't know but you can go outside and count them right now
Why should i go count the animals outside?
To see how many there are.
Why do i want to know how many there are?
Good question
The Wild Turkey had made an incredible comeback. God bless all the Conservationists.
There's definitely no shortage of white-tail deer or wild turkeys in my neighborhood.
Same here in rural WV. I see deer and wild turkey almost every day. Sometimes in our back yard.
Last week I saw a pair of young bear, which is a little unusual for us. We catch a glimpse of a bear about once every 3 years or so.
I hear bows are nice and quiet.
If it's all the same to you guys, I'd be OK with cutting down the Canadian geese back to 1940s numbers.
Hey, I love our squaky geese! Gotta watch our step sometimes though.
Murder chickens could be brought down in numbers a bit. Do people really eat those things? Hate on a plate, my friends, hate on a plate.
Got a shotgun?
Is there a surface-to-air missile season?
Do crossbows count?
I like the way you think, Fren.

Okay!
Curious how accurate this is today as well as I heard turkey numbers are down
https://theconversation.com/wild-turkey-numbers-are-falling-in-some-parts-of-the-us-the-main-reason-may-be-habitat-loss-220510
But I have heard we have less hunters

Are the mexican people and government truly conservationists?
I don't know, do they go hunting?
The only thing I know of is when 2 illegals killed a bald eagle to eat it.

As opposed to Africa.
"Holy crap, that thing's rare! Better poach it."
I'm just here to eat. You hungry?
Not sure what that has to do with the topic at hand.
America?
Now do percentage of whites in the USA
Now try going outside
Cool
Try using a knife to skin a buck
The subway isn't "outside"
Okay

MAKE AMERICA HUNT AGAIN
Can't say this is true of the present Pheasant population.
There are plenty of other animals to eat
Just for the record, 26,000,000 of those 27,000,000 white-tailed deer are currently in my yard enjoying a midnight snack. 🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌
Got a rifle?
I haven't seen many Deer in Ohio this year likely thanks to Chronic Wasting Disease...
Who wants to bet that CWD was developed in a lab specifically to damage the food supply and increase dependency on big agriculture and big government?
I would wanna bet because your right
Do you guys have elk?
Big no. Just on farms.
