This is a problem I have with the current times. Yes things are crazy. Yes there are robe wearing weirdos into butt stuff rituals who plot world domination. But not everything is part of that. What if that person's car was in the shop? What if they had to drive their girlfriends/wife's car because their car had more seats for the kids and she needed to take them to grandma's house? They are getting paid less than what the wear on their car is worth, and I can't fault them for feeling like someone making a problem is not worth the hassle. At the same time, maybe they are ms13 sex traffickers.
My point being, how can we ever recover if it is impossible to ever trust anything? At some point we have to look at our fellow countrymen and feel safe letting our kids stay over at their house.
If we can't do that then we are doomed to be isolated and paranoid forever. That sounds sad to me.
How do we get there?
I don't really care about what the situation was for the driver. If something doesn't feel right, it's probably not. That should always be rule number one. The fact that the driver was unwilling to save the fair and explain the situation, is a huge tell. She did the right thing.
Blind trust is never good. Shit happens. The key is to not let it happen to you and those you care about. We are imperfect people living in an imperfect world. Until that is rectified, we must take care not to become another statistic.
If I have a problem now that I am living in a small town with friends and neighbors, I call my neighbors or my friends and have them pick me up instead of getting into Uber. Sometimes they won't even allowed dogs.
Good advice. Many young women have seen far too many action movies with strong female leads kicking butt. They think they too are invincible. Reality is a cold hard slap in the face.
When you book you get a PIN number.
When you get into the uber before the driver takes the ride. He has to enter a PIN number that matches. They will ask.
And then share the ride, send the ride information to a family or friend. It’s right on the main screen of the app.
First, why would a woman be out alone getting drunk in the first place and then need a stranger to drive her home? This is not victim blaming, but an issue of common sense. I was always taught that if you don't want to become a victim of crime, don't place yourself into those situations if you can avoid them.
This gal however, sounds like she was using her noodle when her alarm bells went off. If something doesn't feel right, it's probably not. I am glad to hear she followed her instincts, even at the cost of some inconvenience.
It's not a good idea to use platforms like this that do not offer accountability and recourse for customers. What is worse is not finding all this out until after something happens - if they survive to talk about it. Too many people mistakenly place too much blind trust in others and think that companies and their workers have their best interests at heart. They do little in the way of research on a company or the services they offer. With the popularity nowadays of these ride platforms, this is good information to know. This is especially true for women. Thanks for posting.
Hey, there are times when there are no other options. But by all means, be careful and be smart about it. Sadly, some people are not - they just blindly trust that nothing is ever going to happen to them, until it does. I have a sister like that. She always called me a fear monger when I tried to give her some sound advice on protecting herself. Unfortunately, she has been victimized a couple of times and it could have been prevented if she had been more situationally aware. Some people insist on walking through life with blinders on.
It may be just me, but I never go any place where I can't carry. That's why I haven't been back to CA to visit my family there. CA gun laws are ridiculous.
I hate flying, so it limits where I go. The same gun issues apply there as well. It's a big hassle to transport firearms. So I usually stick to places that I can drive to and keep my weapon.
I have driven coast to coast, so driving doesn't bother me. I just take more time and enjoy the journey. Seen some pretty cool country and met some really neat people on those road trips. Couldn't do that further down in Mexico and Hawaii however. But those are the only two exceptions.
Used to take short day trips to Northern Mexico back in the day shopping or hanging out in some hole in the wall bar. But I haven't done that in over 25 years. When the cartels starting running rampant, that is when I stopped going there. I don't remember what they called them in Spanish, but it translates something like "meat wagon." In Juarez the meat wagon would drive around the city every day collecting the bodies. Seen a couple at a gas station in their Cadillac that got shot up. That was enough for me. The situation in those border towns has only gotten worse over the years.
I understand the car not starting however and having kids or dogs with you. That sucks. The only thing that could have made that situation worse is being stuck at night in the middle of a bad rain storm.
If driving on a road trip with a gun make sure you know where your route will take you. I drove from Missouri to Maryland for my Grandmother's funeral almost 10 years ago, and knew I would be going through Illinois and of course the Democratic Republic of MD. I didn't take my gun, and I hated it. But I knew if I got pulled over in IL or MD I would go to jail. I have my Texas license to carry, and I also have one from Florida, so I am good in a majority of states - especially southern states.
Well - after the funeral my Aunt gave me a 100yr old police revolver my Grandmother had been saving for me since her husband died when I was a baby. I was stuck driving back to MO with a weapon - and no gun safe. Ultimately I put it in the springs under my back seat just in case. I was ok though - no tickets or anything, but I was sweating it the whole way. The govt shouldn't allow us to be put in that position. Trump needs to push the national carry reciprocity. Carrying isn't a privilege - it is a right.
Agreed. It does complicate traveling like you said. I usually stay out of those crazy states if at all possible. The gun safe is good. I have had to stash mine from time to time as well till I got out of a particular jurisdiction. Needless to say, I tried to avoid those places. Texas and the South were great. Nice people there too.
National carry is long overdue. You right about that. The State should not be able to restrict my Constitutional right to arm.
I live in Nevada. So it is not unusual to see open carry. I also carried in Church. It was a small congregation and at least 70% of the congregants were packing heat. The other 30% knew that the rest of us did.
Yes it is indeed. Something I would have never experienced simply taking a plane somewhere. Some times the experience is in the journey, not the destination.
I carry always (of course I do - I'm a Texan) but today I found myself in a bad position that REALLY pissed me off. I had to take my wife to urgent care, and I took my car since it has a gun safe. I locked the gun in my gun safe and went into the clinic with her, and when we were done we got back in the car and I tried to rearm. The battery in the safe died - no warning or anything. So because I am law-abiding and disarmed to go into a hospital/clinic I couldn't rearm until I got home and grabbed the gun safe key (And replaced the battery).
Had we gone to church instead of urgent care I wouldn't have had any problems because I wouldn't have needed to use the safe. Our church has a sign out front (not the legal 30.05, 30.06, or 30.07 signs Texas requires) that says No Open Carry Allowed. They say nothing about concealed :) . Texans with guns know that usually means the property owners don't have a problem with concealed carriers but don't say that to appease anti-gun people. Same thing if they put up a picture of a firearm with the big red circle/slash around it. If however a property owner knows you are carrying they can ask you to leave and if you don't you can get a trespass citation. Also - in Texas a church is considered as any other property - guns are not prohibited unless all 3 required signs are posted exactly as required. Many states outlaw church carry unless you are their security team.
The next car I buy will be one of the small SUVs with a console that I can have a gun safe built in, and I'll hardwire the safe if it is electric. I don't like to put the key on my keyring in case someone gets my keys.
I hear you. Don't leave home without it. Hardwiring the safe is a good idea if its electric. Good to know.
Nevada is similar to Texas. A church is considered private property and the State has no specific law concerning places of worship and carry. It is up to the owners. My church is a small congregation and about 70% of us are packing. The other 30% know that we do. Just to keep a newbie from possibly getting upset when they walk in, since we live close to CA, we conceal carry. I work the sound booth so I have a good line of sight on the main doors and the rest of the congregation. My partner also carries. I don't feel sorry for the poor bastard that tries to walk in there and start some sh*t. But then again, since it is an open carry State, we don't have much of that kind of thing happen here beyond the typical outside bar fight that sometimes escalates. Drunks and guns don't mix.
It's such a shame when you think about all of the honest people who have to take a side gig like this just to make ends meet. Just this morning, I heard Transportation Secretary Duffy say in an interview that Air Traffic Controllers are taking Uber and Doordash gigs during the Schumer Shutdown.
I am not a uber or lyft driver. however if I was and I picked up people who were carrying either open or concealed I would not have a problem with it nor would they have an issue with me either. Personally in life I do not carry, but if more did I would not be against it.
someone should do a statistic probability on how many people who were rapped, kidnapped, and so on would be not victimized if they were carrying.
I brought this up to a veteran before and they said I was fear mongering.. ok... well this Breanna Morello is fear mongering too.
I never use these deathtraps anyways.
I have to sometimes travel. One time I have to do that because car won't start after parking somewhere walking dogs.
You mean like the dogs are hostile?
No. They were expected to pick up humans and if you have dogs, they refused.
Ah I see what you're talking about.
Another Uber/Lyft reco: never get in one alone. Always 2 or more.
Would 2 dogs count?

Amen. You are correct 100%
Build communities where you know each other and limit your networks back down instead of pretending we know the whole world?
If I have a problem now that I am living in a small town with friends and neighbors, I call my neighbors or my friends and have them pick me up instead of getting into Uber. Sometimes they won't even allowed dogs.
Just use the PIN number option. Or maybe you shouldn’t be traveling without your husband, dad or brother. Muslim style. 😂
Good advice. Many young women have seen far too many action movies with strong female leads kicking butt. They think they too are invincible. Reality is a cold hard slap in the face.
Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face.
Lol. True that fren. And some fall harder than others.
What is the pin number option?
I have 2 dogs, do that count?

Oh. I never have to do b4. I must have miss it somehow.
I was just thinking how easy it would be for anyone to pick you up. Good to be aware!!
I always checked. I rarely have to use it but there were time when I have to use them.

I have to use Uber or Lyft once a while when I was in other cities when I wasn't going to rent a car. I would check the license plates also.

I have to several times but I always am careful. One time walking dogs and car won't start.

Have a great week brain.
Nice to know. U.S is a very beautiful place for road trip.

Even the Uber drivers aren't safe!
https://abqraw.com/post/teen-faces-death-penalty-in-uber-execution-case
Correct. I know about that.

Yes. I have truck drivers who need to do that because truck broke down.
