Anecdote: Back in the day (pre-"free trade" era) minimum wage in the US was $5.25/hour; average ground beef +/- $1.00/pound. Work an hour, buy 5 pounds of decent ground meat, with 25+ cents left over, and eat for a few days off of that.
Today: Minimum wage $7.25 per hour...work for 1 hour, and you're lucky if you can even buy ONE pound of average ground meat for $7.25!
That $7.25 is only 4.50 after taxes, then if it's California, there is the 10% sales tax..
I'm old enough to remember when food stamps couldn't buy prepared food or shit snacks...I worked at a grocery store the summers after HS and college summers. They used to be actual paper coupons and not a debit card

Same here. I worked in a local family owned grocery store from 74 to 79. While my primary job was getting the groceries out of the box, on the shelf and label each good with my pricing gun, no bar codes then, I occasionally saw those food stamps being processed in the office.
My wife always gets pissed off when she compares the overflowing SNAP cart to the limited items in her cart.
So do I. What really annoys the hell out of me are the illegals with not one, but two carts overflowing. I have a fairly tight budget, buy sale items and use coupons. I've never actually had an overflowing cart.
That would involve asking a lot of questions a lot of people both in Business and Politics would prefer not to answer. Because there is no answer that doesn’t make them look bad.

When I started working in 97 minimum wage was 4.50 an hr.
In 67 when I started it was $.95 an hour. And happy to get it back then.
gas was also 33 cents a gallon. I remember during the gas lines during the carter administration gas was around 70 or 80 cents a gallon. So since 1967 minimum wage has only gone up 6.30 cents, but everything else skyrockets.
I pumped gas in 1970 during deer hunting season and we had gas at .25/gal. People were filling 50 gal drums to take to deer camps. Good times.
I used to go grocery shopping with my mom at that time. She'd buy a week's worth of food for about twenty five dollars. Around that time we were in a bank, and the tellers told people to line up at a certain window if they were depositing or cashing welfare checks. Right out loud announcement, would probably get arrested for that now.
in 88 it was 3.35 I was lucky and got a job making five dollars an hour I did alright. Now federal minimum waage is 7.25 an hour in in 37 years it's gone up $3.90. I had taken a part time job for some extra pay back in 08 that was the minimum wage back then too.

My understanding is that we are doing fine, but if my neighbor who recently asked me how to donate is any indication, we could get increases soon. I hope so.
