When one spouse dies why can't they reimburse the surviving spouse the amount that the deceased spouse paid in over their working life? It would be like a life insurance payout. 🤔
I'm not sure how it went for others, but my mother passed away last year at the age of 63. When my Dad called the SS office to see if there is a widow's reimbursement since she paid into SS from 2003 - 2024 (retirement), they offered him a payout of $200.
When my dad died, my mom got a bill from Social Security for the days of that month he didn't live. A threatening letter, I might add. She paid it right away and the bank made a mistake an added a zero to amount. So she was out $3,000 instead of $300. It took a long time to get that mistake fixed and SS to send a refund. And I don't know why, but she was never given a death benefit, nor was one given for her when she later passed away. (Maybe that needs to be requested, I don't know.)
I just don't understand having to pay back SS for the rest of the month they died in. First, way to go, scare widows who are still in shock over the death of a spouse. And like, what, tell the apartment complex that they need to reduce that month's rent because hey, the husband doesn't live there anymore. What are they thinking??
Other crap deals: If a spouse doesn’t work at all, they get 50% of what the spouse is getting for 150% total. But if that spouse worked for low wages, they get that same spousal benefit, because it is more than what they would have gotten on their own. Essentially nothing for working all that time.
If the spouse starts taking their own benefit at 62 and then changes to the spousal benefit when the other person takes their benefit, not only do they lose their own benefit, but the spousal benefit is dinged down for starting at 62.
Very little information on this. And there is no calculator for when the wife (lower income) is older than the husband (higher income). My wife is 5 years older than I am. I had her start her benefit at 62, knowing that she would change to the spousal benefit when I took mine at 66.5. Little did I know that her spousal benefit would only be about 35% of mine. About $400 a month lost. What a rip off.
Seriously?! You are pissed off because you thought you were gonna scam the American people out of more money because you have an older wife who didn't earn much and obviously did not plan for retirement on her own? So she took "her" SSA early, thinking she was gonna get a lot more just because she married you. Sorry, no sympathy.
Oh, and all this is part of the interview process that is discussed whenever someone is entitled on other accounts. If your wife ignored it or thought she was gonna outsmart the system, sorry for her.
Aa a woman who worked her entire life and PLANNED for retirement, I have no sympathy for any woman (or man) under 70 who didn't plan for her future life.
No I'm sick of people expecting the govt to foot the bill for their life style. If you are too stupid or too lazy to plan for your future, then why do you expect everyone else to do it?
I'm 68. I knew since I was in my 20;s that I needed to plan for my future and to not expect anyone else, to include my husband, to support me.
I have nothing but distain for women and men who think that the govt is supposed to take care of them in their retirement. There have been enough public service announcements throughout the years, plus all the information is available online and through your "financial planners," to know that SSA was not meant to be your sole source of income in retirement.
I have three, no four, sources of income in my retirement and not a single one of them is from my spouse.
Well good for you but many if not most Americans didn’t/don’t have that luxury. Rather they paid into SS and upon retirement want it, every last bit of it as it is their retirement and it’s the corrupt way the government is handing it back to us that pisses us off. At one point in our history the SS was intended to be American,s retirement and for many it still has to be. Absolutely everything this young lady stated is true and it’s wrong what the government does with OUR MONEY.
Plan for what f'ing future? The staggering majority of people under 30 will never even have a home to retire in, let alone afford any bootstraps to pull on and just saaaaaaaaave for that "eggnest"
Yes, I do, based on my wages. They are NOT anywhere near what would be considered high. As a matter of fact, they are only a hundred dollars over the average SSA payment, so I am not rich by any stretch of the imagination. I just planned for my future instead of keeping my fingers crossed that I would be able to live a normal.. You do realize that SSA was NOT meant to be the only source of income you were supposed to have in retirement? It was meant to be ONE THIRD of your retirement. When companies started to quit funding retirement pensions, people should have been smart enough to see the writing on the wall. You either needed to find a job that did provide a pension or increase your savings.
So you say "No I'm sick of people expecting the govt to foot the bill for their life style. " and " I have nothing but distain for women and men who think that the govt is supposed to take care of them in their retirement. " And yet you seem more than happy to accept Government money and the "care" that the govt gives to you ? Can you hear yourself ?
Social Security is the scam. Workers are literally FORCED to pay into the system, can only withdraw at the age that the system decides upon, and then if they person is still working after that age they can only withdraw a smaller amount. If people weren’t FORCED to pay into the system, they could then decide how to better manage their retirement. The stock market is a scam as well.
You're a fuckin idiot. No, they are just trying to get as much money as they can back before they die.
Them taking your money and finding any pretense to not give it back is the problem.
Any spousal this, waive that is fucked up stupid shit. Give us our God damn money.
There should bare minimum be the option to lump sum everything you have paid in (even that is you taking it in the ass). But it would force them to actually keep a clean book and only play with the fuckton of interest they can make on all that money you invest over your life.
It should be optional, pay into it, get benefits from it. Don't pay into it, you're on your own. I know I would much rather keep my own money and invest it, and for sure get back more than social security would ever pay, and if I die the rest can go to my kids, not disappear.
Bull! The retirement age has been set for years. Because you failed to educate yourself before now does not mean that they "just changed" it for your situation.
She should look at the Social Security AIME calculation. They take your money and givev it to someone else. Isn’t that socialism?

“ This progressive structure means that Social Security provides higher replacement rates for lower earners while still providing meaningful benefits for higher earners.”
The death jab insures many will never collect.
catherine austin fitts was right
She’s 100% correct.
Sorry but no. She is clueless.
You must not be getting SS yet because she is absolutely correct.
Clueless how?

There's WAY more people in the wagon than those pulling it ...
Social Security is one giant fraud to make sure the Banksters can push off balancing their books to a later date.
Both her parents passed in their 60's. I think about that a lot I'm 71. Good gene's are an inconvenience to the system as it is.

That's fucked up, I'm sorry
Because SSA is paid in advance. If you don't live the entire month, you are not entitled to the entire payment.
The $250 is paid to the Spouse, No one else.
Then take it out of the next check with an explanation.
But they keep all of the money that you paid in for your whole life if you die. I'd say it it a bit more than $250 that is owed.
Me and all my brothers and sisters got a check for $250 when my mom died. There are 7 of us !
Most of the time the death benefit is sent to the funeral home to apply to their bill.
Thanks! That's probably what happened.

Get real. Are you a Democrat? Your comment is laughable.

This is why when they first put up social security so many apposed it. It was said beck then that it was a form of socialism.

How much did CONgress steal to fund "The mating rituals of Snails."
They just raised my retirement age to 67. FFS, ASSHOLES.

Sports Gambling seems to be very popular.
Sorry about your mom young lady.
I think soon there will be retribution on those demons that made life so much more difficult for us all to bear.
Don’t pay money to people who hate you
