It has done so much damage to young men. It was kinda bad for my generation growing but now it is so much worse with smartphones I don’t know how a parent can monitor it. I mean some kids are watching porn at 10 years old.
We find out the gender of our baby next week and if we have a boy that will be one of my main concerns. Not going to give them a phone until high school anyways but best I can do is block it at home and educate.
I made the cell phone mistake with my oldest. My wife and i consider it our single greatest parenting mistake. The second I gave it to them i watched them shrink as a person and their spark dim. they stopped their creative outlets, engaged with us less, massively higher anxiety etc... they would wake up with their bully and goto sleep with their bully. when we grounded them and took their phone away they quickly found their love of drawing, creating, cooking, helping, and engaged with us so much more.
I started monitoring their phone and found out that they were being sexually harassed and sexually bullied in 6th grade, to the point of us pulling them from school. The school didn't help us, the district didn't help us despite the evidence. When they do get a phone absolutely monitor it they do not get privacy when it's something they don't understand or cant comprehend. People will make you feel terrible for this, but it's a parent protecting their kid and their mental health by doing so.
Content consumption is real. Kids are constantly exposed to keeping up with the Joneses, the people we elevate in society are degenerates, music is negative repetition and thought forming, constant sexualization etc... phone addiction is very real, adults are all addicted, so how would a young impressionable mind handle it?
Honestly not giving them a phone is the best thing you can do. Protect them and their mind. You will get pressure from people about those decisions but your kids are far more important than their opinions.
