He knew going into this that the Mar’s window opened every 26 months and the Moon every 10 days.
Mars remains on the long-term roadmap with work potentially starting in 5 to 7 years, but the immediate priority is now "securing the future of civilization" via the faster lunar route.
What has changed down here on our little spinning ball of dirt to change the mind of a man who’s main mission in life is to get humanity on Mars, so too make sure it’s always here?? It’s not like he just woke up and it dawned on him that the moon would do that much quicker..🤔
Elon Musk just announced a major strategic pivot for
@SpaceX
: the company is officially shifting its primary focus to building a "self-growing city" on the Moon.
The logic is centered on speed. While Mars missions are restricted by orbital alignments every 26 months, SpaceX can launch to the Moon every 10 days. This allows for much faster iteration and development.
@elonmusk
estimates that a lunar city could be achieved in less than 10 years. In contrast, a similar presence on Mars is now projected to take 20 or more years to establish.

I get that,,, but Elon didn’t decide on Mars without considering all other relative options and that definitely includes the Moon.
My takeaway from this is that he changed his mind from Mars being the first city to the Moon. If that is actually the case “what has changed” that would make a VERY detailed oriented person like Elon, who knew was ever 26 months, pivot to building on the moon?
We’re being asked to believe nothing has changed other than Elon’s mind due to the duration of time in between launches. Which,,, he’s known and considered for over a decade.
Between his relationship with Trump and NASA's head, Isaacman, and their desire to land on the moon during Trump's term, that puts 2028 as the deadline. They can't do that without Elon. He has a contract with NASA. So he's pivoted from Mars mission to working full time on the Moon mission by 2028.
Ah ok gotcha now. Yea good point. Maybe there is something behind the scenes that is preventing or delaying progress on getting to Mars so moon is now better option. Can't just scrap the whole thing at this point. I don't know, beats me. Perhaps some day we will get more details.
He definitely doesn’t owe anyone an explanation other than, possibly, private equity.
It seems weird that a guy that can simultaneously do all things Elon is into and on do it on a very high level would pivot this dramatically based on info he’s had all along🤔
Could be he is worried what will happen if Democrats manage to get fully back in power after Trump, even for a while. How many of you have read "Moon is a Harsh Mistress" by Robert Heinlein? The general impression of Musk I have that he is probably quite familiar with Heinlein's writings. In that novel a self-sustaining Moon colony goes to war to win their independence from Earth - I think mostly UN, as Heinlein used the idea of a future Earth where UN had gotten into having actual power over most countries on Earth, and was functioning a lot like an actual planetary wide government, that being the common guess as what might happen in the future during the era when Heinlein wrote most of his novels.
Anyway, the colonists win, partly because they start dropping big rocks on Earth, using machinery that had been built to transfer what is getting mined on the Moon to orbits where it can be more easily transported to Earth, as far as I remember (it's been a few decades since I read the book). At least in that story having the Moon means having the high ground when it's a war between Earth and the Moon.
So, who is building this city? Robots, perhaps? The Moon would make the perfect testing site. Robots can be packed tightly onto a rocket, require no food, never get sick, can work for long periods of time, and don't need oxygen.
All of his current businesses / projects are directly tied to his goal of colonizing space.
*Tesla
*SpaceX
*Robots
*Ai
*Solar
*boring machine
They all bring something big to the table to help him accomplish his goal.
Think about how quick he will be able to build massive spaces(?) for humans to live in once he gets all the parts of his boring machine to the moon and Tesla robots doing the work..🤔
Those robots will be able to work 24/7 and be built in a way where they are not gonna be effected by the moon’s environment
That’s a good answer bc I can see how a guy like him, as he grew older, might pivot based on his own mortality, or lack there of…
Still not sure I’m ready to buy that until I hear it from him,,, but it’s logical!
*I’m a guy who believes life span is gearing up to extend DRAMATICALLY and a guy like Musk would definitely participate. If that’s true then him worrying about not being alive to see us get to Mars becomes much less of an issue🤔
The base on the moon probably already exists and they are preparing the disclosure...
Do they have bugs there? LUNA-TICKS 🤪😮😂
That definitely seems to be the case.
Obviously the moon aliens lifted their no fly zone
😁
They probably moved back to Saturn....
It’s easier to fake moon landing 2.0
🙂
Since WH’s control Greenland = no more fake Mars pics……😀.
My question is “why the shift”?

The moon is a much better sandbox to start off earth living.
Also, with no atmosphere and low gravity once an industrial society is running it makes a great jumping off spot for Mars.
Very true, but he’s known this..
Yeah,,, but Elon’s known that from the get go.
It is explained in the tweet.

I like that, makes sense!

the moon is closer.....
Yes,, but that’s not new to him.
Reserve your condo now!
Sounds like a quiet place where you can sit in your apartment, read novels and watch the starry view.

Definitely ai robots.

When do we get to deport the Wokes to Uranus? Asking for a fren...
Let msg Elon and I’ll get back with you
Will they pretend the Van Allen radiation belt doesn't exist again?
From what I understand they’ve know how to deal with that.

if Denmark can claim Greenland as theirs, then perhaps we can claim ownership of the moon for the USA.
Elon wants to see this happen in his lifetime, building on Mars will take decades longer to complete.

Are you asking me why I’m thinking about this or are you reiterating what my point is for the post?
"Because it's there." - George Mallory.
