It's a Catch-22 with the banning. You have to do timeouts but not many lengthy bans because you want fired up people on your site who are passionate, creative and invested enough to defend a stance and maybe say stuff they shouldn't. Being reserved and perfectly polite just doesn't always work in the moment, even though it's preferable.
Any other site, you could never explore ideas as freely and openly as happens here, because you'd be banned
