Lets start with a point that we can (most of us atleast) can agree.
Iranian Ayatollah regime is a puppet regime for British Empire. After all they have been managing Persia/Iran for almost a 100 years. They coup'ed the Qajar dynasty, put the Shah in place, got rid of him, put his son, got rid of him and put the Ayatollah.
So, if the regime is a British puppet state, lets start with "Who tells the regime what to do?" - answer, of course, is their masters - the British.
So who is closing the Hormuz Strait? Iranians, on behalf of British, as per their orders.
Lets let that statement sink in and let it sit in our minds for a bit.
Iranian regime - puppets
British - masters
Hormuz strait - closed
Regime follows instructions.
So - British ordered the regime to close the strait.
Just an additional point here. Before all the talk of "closing Hormuz" strait, British did another thing - they turned off the insurance for all ships crossing the strait.
So, the goal is clear: British wanted to shut down the Hormuz strait.
Reason? Easy to guess - Trump acted without permission from the Empire and so he must be punished. Close the Hormuz, whole world screams, Trump blinks - and boom, his first real failure and just before the mid terms. Story closed.
But Trump had a backup. He came up with his own insurance alternative, backed by the US government.
That was when the strait actually got closed. Exactly as per what British wanted.
So lets use this hypothesis and see what we get from this.
Start with: British closed the Hormuz Strait
Trump: Asks all the allies (including British) to "help" open the strait. TOP KEK. Trump asking the guys closing the strait to help open it.
Then Trump stays:
We don't need the strait, whoever needs it can open it.
Mega KEK. The guys closing the strait are the ones hurting, and the guy who is supposed to get hurt is the guy who doesn't need it.
But now the strait is hurting UK,Europe and China more than anyone else. The Empire now needs to decide what to do?

Keep the strait closed - then its their own funeral

OR - here comes the big brains - Open the strait for China, their most promising puppet to take on Trump, still more moves left, trade deals pending, Trump's trip planned - let China get a breather while hold the breath themselves even if they are turning blue.
The Empire chose 3. They would rather hurt themselves, which is fine because they planned well in advance and have their next-in-line puppet still half alive - and allowed Asian ships to go throuh.
Then Trump did something: He hit the Kharg Island. Just the military targets for now, but he showed that he can take out the entire Hormuz operation in one day.
So, China now knows that its not because of the British generosity that they are breathing, but Trump's generosity. The calculus slowing changing in China.
Then Trump postponed the visit, to let China be able to survey the scenery properly, to make up their mind - Does the Empire have their back, or are they on their own.
Then Trump started talking with some "undisclosed" part of the regime and even gave time before taking out the entire Iranian energy infrastructure.
How does this translate to Iran ?
Continue to obey your master and lose your country, OR disobey your master and risk whatever they have on you. Whether its a gun held to their head, or their blackmails or whatever leverage they have.
For every set of mullahs who come next in line, the calculus is "Do we obey our current master or switch to the new master?'
If they chose to obey their original masters, then Whack-a-Mullah, and next in line please!
Trump is using the Empire to put extreme pressure on everyone in line in the Iranian Regime, until it reaches a point where the next in line is more afraid of losing their life than whatever the Empire can do to them.
THAT is the TL;DR.
Trump is filtering for the real person who can be put in charge of Iran - the one who fears death more than their master. AKA, one that is not blackmailed / compromised.
The beauty of this plan is that Trump does not even need to know who that suitable person is. That person is forged by fire. Whoever can keep standing in the face of the worst the Empire can do, is by definition, a "BASED" guy.

I'm not savvy as to why Trump doesn't ever mention his name, but I suspect it's because he IS the guy, Trump knows it, and doesn't ever want to give any optics of himself choosing the leader for another country; instead he calls on the People to do it.

Keep in mind that the British used both Pahlavi's father and grandfather, manipulated them into handing over the oil to Britain and when they wisened up, disposed them.
The father in fact was creating a powerful Iran modernised and built on the oil revenue and clearly became a threat to the Empire, when they toppled him.
Would the grandson be yet another pawn? Or has he learnt all the lessons? Can he be manipulated as well?
I am guessing that given the family history, it wouldnt take much for the WHs to fully get him up to speed and make sure he is solid. But like you said, instead of talking about him, Trump gives this impression that something might be wrong with him.

Trump is remaining neutral. He's said he isn't looking to regime change - that's up to the Iranian people. If he says a name, he's "backing" whoever that may be.
I don't remember where or when it was, but Trump said that the Iranian people need to chose their leader and form of government. So, no, he will not publicly state any name.

It made me think of something I noticed long ago, way before Trump got elected. When reading about Iran I was surprised to find out who the Great Satan was in their country: The UK.
Not the USA, which they considered a puppet of the British Crown. The US was more of a Great Satan Junior. So the objective is to split Iran away from the British, representing one arm of the cabal. Agreed.
The fact that the US has left oil production infrastructure alone points to a another objective: ending Chinese manufacturing dominance. Iran's oil was effectively taken off the open market to subsidize China's economy with sub-market rates, with Iran's people paying the brunt of the cost, and putting every other economy at an competitive disadvantage. As Iran gains access to world oil markets at open market prices, the subsidies will end. China's input costs will be jolted higher, ending their manufacturing advantages and forcing them into a difficult (regime-ending?) adjustment period.
Oh and there is yet another objective. To break apart UK from the City of London control. King and Queen coming to US right in the middle of this. Significant I think.

I don't understand all the talk about the Strait being 'closed'. Every day I look at this, and there are hundreds of ships in the Persian Gulf, if you click on them you can see their track right through the Strait.

Your mention of the relationship between the UK and Iran was not known to me but puts muslim immigration to the UK in a different light. It also then frames this conflict as something of UK vs USA which is a different consideration.
