https://blog.catbox.moe/post/821058172332769280/removing-idle-uploads
I am going to keep this update short, but try to justify/give as much background as I can. Beginning July 6th, 2026 and applying retroactively, files uploaded anonymously that have not had a download/hit in over 2 years will be removed from Catbox.
Catbox has been running for a little over 11 years now, and as such has accumulated what I can only call cruft. Prior to the introduction of Litterbox (and even still to this day really), many people use Catbox as a dumping ground for their script outputs, junk data shares, etc, without considering that this is a free/community funded service. This has lead to an intense amount of data (currently 66 TB) that has not been accessed in over a year, potentially more. Normally the ebb and flow of Lain would keep the idle/active files balanced, with increasing usage, and the exponential increased cost of hard drives due to AI datacenter expansion, I’m forced between a rock and a hard place: put thousands of dollars of my personal money towards additional storage space, or begin culling. And if you think the “thousands of dollars” is an exaggeration, below is the standard hard drive I purchased September 2025 for Catbox servers:
And, since I would really not like data loss, I purchase 2 of these drives for parity. Unfortunately for everyone involved, I don’t have $1,968 to drop every 3 months (about how long it takes Catbox to fill up 20 TB)! Before the prices for everything sky rocketed, I could handle $800~ every 3 months. Before you say something, yes, I have looked at the refurbished market as well - their prices are similarly dismal.
So, now that the justification is out of the way, I’m sure there will be some blowback for this, as I’ve always positioned Catbox as “a filehost that keeps your files until the heat death of the universe”. Perhaps that was my teenage nativity. For reading this far though, you get the special info: the files that are removed will be going to single-layer (non redunant) storage. They will no longer be accessible on files.catbox.moe. If there is a file that you found on a forum post from years ago that has been culled, feel free to email me, and I can pull the file back into the fold.
It sucks that it’s come to this, but with the ouroboros of money that’s happening in the AI bubble, we can only hope for a very sharp needle to blow it up.
Thanks for the update on this.
Catbox is an essential part of sharing information anonymously - including shitposting memes.
I'd imagine when this great "purge" takes place, many memes and shitposts will be rendered lost forever on GAW and other places - and probably a few important PDFs and other files that were shared by anons over the years.
This is why many of us have told you to BACK UP LOCALLY - No cloud or virtual storage - If you don't physically have it in your possession, you don't really have it, now do you?

Soooooo much information on this site was stored on Catbox. A lot of it is now gone forever. Or will be. Unless someone with time goes through and opens every catbox link on GAW. A seemingly impossible task, unless someone with the AI knack (that's not me) uses it to open all the catbox links and buys the posts another two years.
Like what? Besides shitpost memes, inside jokes and things like that?
Go do a search, find some of those file links and post them in this thread so we can download local and preserve them individually.
Then we can repost them as needed or have them available if anyone asks. I'll help and do my part donating some drive space...
What’s a good locally hosted, relatively secure FTP server these days?
No eyed deer...
I'm old and lazy.
If I don't kick it up to a Google share, I Catbox it... alternatively WinRAR @max compression and send it via email...
Or...or ...snail mail a usb or micro SD packed all pretty in GLITTER in a special gift box

Orwell would be proud.
Thank you so much for your time, effort and resources in making CatBox happen and keeping it going!
Honestly, I think it's been an absolutely integral part of the GAW movement. It's a treasure.
Again, thank you.
I appreciate that you have kind words to say but I'm not the one running catbox. I'm just the messenger of what I consider to be important but bad news.
Thank you for the clarification. And thank you for giving us an important heads up.
If you want to thank Catbox...send the guy some money to keep it going.
I'm sure every bit helps...
Priced out drives lately?
Pfft... just dropped $300 on a 1TB thumb drive...I need it AND it IS the shit... wicked quick
You can LOOK at it... but touch it...and die! 😁
Maybe cats5 can use his cat AI to scrape GAW for catbox links and download them all to a cat mirror?

If this site let you search comments instead of just post titles, you could run a keyword search and bring up every single comment with a catbox link.
True. Idk how many times I've wished that I could direct search for key words in comments! Would be great for archiving certain subjects into different save folders.
But... Hell, who are we kidding here? The damn downvote button has been broken site wide for months now! Im beginning to suspect at this point now that it's on purpose after reading the post and comment strings on the main C/ board.
Understandable. Thanks for all you’ve done and keeping our files for as long as possible!
Quick make an AI agent to look at all the files.
Catbox is so free and uncensored that at one point Verizon banned the domain.
Something on there they really did not want people to see. Can you share some stats, or share some of the most popular viewed items?
Thank you for running this site.
Thank you for sharing that you have spent so much money without anything in return, you are truly kind. God bless for all.
I thought they already did this, but with URLs unused for one year.
Server space is limited, after all.
Save stuff offline.
They are paying way too much for hard drives. I just checked prices, and a WD Red 16TB drive is under $700 on Amazon.
I have over 100TB of drives on my home system. It seems insane that I only paid a little over $200 per drive for the 16TB drives. I won't buy larger capacity drives until larger ones get enough larger to justify the cost. I keep backups and have never lost a single file out of millions since 1989.
Any file that I have uploaded still exists on my system. Every file I've ever downloaded is still on my system.
There's a big difference in drives and drives for production servers. Many times they have funny formatting/ sector sizes or custom firmware for management. Dell is famous for it as are hitachi storage arrays..
Someone should get the data hoarders group on Reddit involved. There are a lot of people who archive entire sites just because they feel the need.
