We knew a lot of Irish folks. My husband was best friends with the owners of an Irish bar. My best friend was married to an Irishman who was part of a totally dedicated band of Redskins ticket holders who adopted us as part of the group. I knew 1st through at least 5th generation Irishman and they ALL knew the history and it was part of who they were. Most of their music retells that history and they all know the songs.
I remember one night at an Irish pub, the 2nd generation woman next to me stood on her chair with her hand over her heart during the singing of a song about the black and tan. She was as serious as a heart attack. Made an impression.
The bar I mentioned had a lot of FBI who were regulars, because the IRA often showed up when they were in the area. The bar had an inside group called The Irish Drinking and Poets Society. At one of their basement meetings, I met the 1st ranking employee at the Embassy AND that bald headed IRA woman from the 1970's
