Several fiber optic cables across France were vandalized on Sunday night, Bloomberg reports.
The attacks were carried out in France’s southern and eastern regions, and according to Le Parisien, they have affected services provided by carriers such as SFR, Bouygues, and Free. Repair work is currently underway.
In an X post, France’s Secretary of State for Digital Affairs, Marina Ferrari, condemned the attacks as "cowardly and irresponsible" and pledged to "cooperate with operators until communications and services are fully restored."
Paris, the host city of the ongoing Olympic Games, has not been impacted by the fiber optic cable cuts, according to AFP. Orange SA, the telecom partner for the Olympics, also told Bloomberg that venues hosting the events are unaffected.
However, this is the second attack on France’s infrastructure since the start of the Games. On Friday, coordinated arson attacks on high-speed train services disrupted travel before the Opening Ceremony. A far-left activist was arrested in connection with those attacks on Sunday.
While investigations are underway, Yahoo News notes that early reports do not indicate any links between the cable vandalism and the rail attack.
