You hold it with your thumb so you don't drop all your paint on the ground
You can also hold a palette on the back of the hand with the index finger forward

If you look at McNaughtons other paintings, the shimmer is similar to the angel or Jesus paintings.
And the Presidential flag!
looks like rays of light/sunshine from the center seeping through.
Second observation details: Looks to either be two paint brushes, or the paint brush is reflecting itself as though the painting is a mirror or something.
He is holding 2 brushes. You can see the handle of the bottom brush is clearly in front of he drape and not a reflection.
