This guy has been on the periphery of this whole story since the early days, and he seems quite based from the little I know, but I’ve never got confirmation on this one way or the other:

He sniffed out the deepstate trap or someone filled him in. Feds never swarm the plane like that either for that offense and how did they know he even had the money? They tried to set him up several times including the conversation about emails with Alexander Downer in the London bar.

He was approached by a MI6 guy, IN ITALY, on his way to USA, actually, and the guy gave him the envelope, which set off all sorts of flags.
